The Role:

The health service is looking for a positive, enthusiastic, team-orientated Consultant Geriatrician who is able to provide high quality clinical and non-clinical service to the benefit of the Healthcare patients and our regional community.

Working within our existing inpatient services, Cognitive Dementia and Memory clinic (CDAMS) and Specialist Falls and Balance clinic, there is also an opportunity for the successful applicant to develop new services including a GEM@home program and other Geriatric outpatient clinics.

The position is a full-time permanent position.

Duties:

  • Provide high quality and comprehensive services to GEM and Rehabilitation of the Healthcare, both in community and inpatient settings. 
  • Where appropriate, provide a consultancy and liaison service to other clinicians involved in the management of GEM patients. 
  • Supervise the clinical care provided by Registrars/Hospital Medical Officers.
  • Provide guidance and support to health care professionals, volunteers and other workers in the provision of GEM and Rehabilitation Medicine.
  • Actively contribute to the theoretical and practical knowledge in the clinical practice situations.
  • Identify quality improvement opportunities.
  • Provide appropriate education to clients, families and carers regarding all aspects of Geriatric medicine.
  • Participate in relevant Geriatric medicine public clinics
  • Clinical leadership and management roles involve providing support in quality and risk management activities.  They include the following:-
    • Supporting SWH Clinical staff by promoting the effective functioning of inpatient care SWH’s Subacute Services.
    • Facilitating a team approach to the management of subacute patients.
    • Assisting in the development of relevant policies and procedure manuals and systems.
    • Participating in decision making in relation to operational matters concerning the subacute service.  
    • Participating in ongoing Quality Improvement and Clinical Risk Management activities of the subacute service, including relevant clinical audits.
    • Supporting and assisting in the training of medical students, junior medical staff and nursing staff involved in the management of subacute patients. 
    • Comply with contractual arrangements as developed with other organisations.
  • Utilise appropriate problem-solving skills, identify a range of alternative solutions and seek advice appropriately.
  • Provide professional support to colleagues as needed.
  • Participate in the management of complaints, incidents and accidents to ensure responsiveness to patient’s needs.
  • Regularly review service standards to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Participate in strategic planning related to subacute services.
  • Initiate, implement and monitor agreed work practice and management strategies
  • Participate in negotiations and discussions to identify human, financial and physical resource requirements to assist the service.
  • Attend multidisciplinary meetings.
  • Participation in relevant research activities is encouraged.

The Health Service:

The Healthcare is a fully integrated facility with a total of 282 beds (216 acute, 36 aged care and 30 mental health).  The Campus (212 beds) provides acute, rehabilitation and mental health care, together with extensive outpatient and community services.  Wards include medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, six bed critical care unit, dialysis, emergency, inpatient psychiatry, GEM and rehabilitation.  There are three fully equipped operating theatres and a separate endoscopy suite.

The hospital is considered one of the most modern and technologically advanced health services in regional Australia.  This enables them to provide world best-practice treatment, care and support to a catchment population of 110,000 spread across 10,323 square kilometres.  Only three hours' drive from Melbourne with a direct train service four times per day, there are excellent facilities for education from preschool to university level, and opportunities to participate in all areas of the creative arts and sport.  The Healthcare has approximately 16,000 admissions and 26,500 emergency department attendances per year.
