The Position
This position is fully funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for the Weather of the 21st Century. The incumbent will contribute to and benefit from being a part of a supportive and vibrant Centre community which offers unparalleled networking and professional development opportunities.

The Centre is a major seven-year initiative funded by the Australian Research Council. It is a consortium of 24 partners led by Monash University in partnership with The University of Melbourne, The University of New South Wales, The Australian National University, and the University of Tasmania.

The Centre’s team-based research is focused on how Australia’s weather is being reshaped by climate change. The Centre conducts blue-sky research with real-world applications for communities, industry and government. The research program is made up of six integrated Centre Projects: Weather System Dynamics; Climate Variability and Weather Systems; Weather Systems in a Warmer World; Weather Resources; High-Impact Weather; and Modelling Science.

The Government and Industry Liaison role is an integral part of the Centre’s Engagement and Impact Program. The role of Government & Industry Liaison reports to the Deputy Director (Partnerships, based at ANU) and has no direct reports. The role will also be guided by the Centre’s Senior Advisor – Engagement and Impact, based at Monash University.

The Government and Industry Liaison will be a member of Research School of Earth Sciences (RSES). Our culture is one of inclusivity and respect and we encourage everyone to embrace these values as expressed in our culture statement.

Applicants seeking secondments from the Australian Public Service or state public sectors are encouraged to apply.

The Person
The Government & Industry Liaison - Climate & Weather will facilitate dialogue and exchange between 21st Century Weather researchers and a range of stakeholders. Working under guidance from the Deputy Director (Partnerships) and the Senior Adviser – Engagement and Impact, you will assume responsibility for the Centre’s knowledge brokerage and partner integration functions and steer the implementation of its science translation and outreach strategy. You will actively engage with key partners in industry and government to understand their requirements for weather and climate data, tools and training that facilitate policy development and business decision making. You will further foster those relationships to enable the Centre to understand and deliver targeted research. You will also engage with the Centre’s researchers to gain a thorough working understanding of the core research being undertaken by the centre, identify linkages and potential pathways to impact, and provide guidance and training to centre researchers who are inexperienced in collaborating outside of academia. The role is also responsible for the compilation and production of regular science briefings for policy makers that are accessible to a non-scientific audience while maintaining rigour and accuracy.

Your ability to lead by example, coupled with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, will enable you to foster respectful and productive working relationships with staff, students and colleagues at all levels within RSES in line with the RSES Culture Statement.
