Job description

The Royal Hobart Hospital Cardiology Department is seeking the skills and experience of a General Practitioner with Specific Interest (GPSI) to undertake supervised practice in a weekly clinic that focuses on common cardiac arrhythmia presentations, such as atrial fibrillation and supraventricular tachycardia.

The incumbent would clinically assess a wide variety of cardiac presentations, undertake comprehensive cardiovascular risk assessment, organise appropriate investigations, counsel regarding risk factor reduction and prescribe appropriate anticoagulation and antiarrhythmic therapy if necessary. The general practitioner would gain significant skills and experience in a supervised setting to take back to their routine clinical work. The cardiology outpatient service is staffed by cardiologists, cardiology registrars, nurse practitioners, specialist nurses and cardiac physiologists. We would love for you to join our team.

The Role:

GPs with a Specific Interest (GPSI) function as part of a specialty outpatient team by performing clinical duties as determined by the clinical lead of the unit. The role of a GPSI may include consultation with patients, specific procedural tasks, and other tasks specified in the units GPSI scope of practice. Evidence from other jurisdictions shows that GPSIs are accepted by patients, hospital staff and GPs; that wait lists are improved; integration between primary and secondary services benefits; and GPs can take learnings from the specialist outpatient clinic back into the community.

Duties will vary according to the specialist outpatient clinic that the GPSI is working in and the agreed scope of work with the head of that unit, but may include:

  • Provide consultation and patient review within specialist outpatient clinics.
  • Participate in the effective triage of specialist outpatient wait lists.
  • Perform agreed procedures.
  • Coordinate individuals’ clinical needs, including liaison with the patient’s normal care team such as GP.
  • Participate in the ongoing review and development of the specialist outpatient clinic administrative supports and processes including templates guiding care and associated Tasmanian Health Pathways.
  • The incumbent can expect to be allocated duties, not specifically mentioned in this document, that are within the capacity, qualifications and experience normally expected from persons occupying positions at this classification level.
