Graduate Research School

  • Fixed-term to 30 June 2027, full-time. Current UNE Staff: In taking up this appointment, please be aware your current fixed term or permanent role will cease the day prior to you taking this position.
  • $104,596.00 to $123,964.00 per annum (Level B Lecturer)
  • Plus 17% employer superannuation

  • 4 weeks annual leave plus Christmas week shutdown, per annum,

About the Graduate Research School

Currently there are over 26,000 students at UNE, nearly 600 of whom are Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students in the Graduate Research School. The Graduate Research School is led by the Dean and approximately 15 professional staff who facilitate and support the University's Higher Degree by Research (HDR) candidates through the provision of administrative services and management, development and promotion of HDR study, research training, knowledge transfer, and innovation from application for admission and scholarship throughout the HDR candidature journey to graduation. The Graduate Research School fosters research excellence, provides advice and information, and performs research training, analytical, reporting, and decision-making functions related to research quality matters and the University's academic governance and management functions.

About the role

As a Graduate Research Academic at the University of New England, you will lead the design and delivery of postGraduate Research training and manage related industry engagement and employability initiatives in the Graduate Research School, working under direction of the Dean. You are expected to develop and deliver a research internship program aligned with the National PhD Industry Program that will significantly enhance HDR employability and completion revenue. Key responsibilities include conducting benchmarking of supervision training, HDR professional development initiatives, and research internship programs at other universities and adopting best practice. You are expected to show appropriate levels of academic leadership in educational design and delivery and engage in researching and writing HDR reports, peer reviewed publications and/or scholarship of learning and teaching. 

Key Responsibilities

  1. Provide high-level advice and detailed reports to the Dean of Graduate Research, supervisors of HDR students, HDR Coordinators, and relevant committees regarding policies, procedures, and guidelines in relation to compliance and HDR candidature management. 
  2. Contribute to the periodic review and continuous improvement of HDR Courses including the development and delivery of a Graduate Certificate that will serve as an entry pathway into HDR courses and foundational research training for a professional doctorate program. 
  3. Manage the development and implementation of an eligible research internship program to align with the National Industry PhD Program.
  4. Provide high level advice on the involvement of HDR candidates in research partnership and internship opportunities, including expert advice to stakeholders on the development of HDR agreements and other relevant funding opportunities.
  5. Facilitate external HDR internship funding opportunities and provide support and guidance to candidates seeking internship opportunities.
  6. Provide expert advice and training for internal stakeholders on key HDR partnership requirements and updates relating to policy and national initiatives.
  7. Ensure compliance with relevant legislation, codes, and guidelines in relation to the administration of HDR studentships, internships, and funding. 
  8. Develop and deliver high-calibre transferable skills and professional development training for HDR candidates.
  9. Take responsibility for the development and ongoing review and reporting on the Higher Degree Research supervision register, supervisor accreditation and training, and supervisor evaluations to ensure compliance with current University and external policies and processes.
  10. Maintain knowledge of the Rules, Policies, and Procedures of the University and awareness of significant issues in the tertiary education sector, government, industry and the community including key national priorities and policies such as the Australian Council of Graduate Research Good Practice Principles, TEQSA, ESOS, HESF and the Code of Responsible Conduct of Research (NH&MRC).

About you

To be successful in this role, you will have:

Qualifications

  • A doctoral qualification and a developing academic research and publication record. 

Experience

  • Demonstrated tertiary teaching and curriculum development expertise, preferably including experience teaching academic writing and publishing, literature reviews and referencing skills. 
  • The ability to make significant contributions to governance, management, and quality assurance of learning, teaching, and research supervision that advance the quality and standards of Higher Degree Research offered at UNE. 
  • Management experience in higher education, demonstrated leadership capacity, and the ability to work effectively to build team cohesion. 

Knowledge 

  • Understanding of Research Higher Degree administration including knowledge of research training and supervision requirements, and stakeholder engagement with industry and community. 

Skills 

  • The successful applicant will be able to convene conferences, organise and facilitate research and supervision training, and manage industry-based research placements or internships.
  • The position requires high level planning and analytical skills, strategic thinking and problem solving, and a well-developed understanding of Research Higher Degree administration. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are necessary, including: 
  • Liaising at all levels using interpersonal communication, consultation, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong report-writing and presentation skills and the ability to facilitate research and supervision training and industry engagement.
