About Perth Racing

The Western Australian Turf Club (trading as Perth Racing) has a remarkable history of hosting thoroughbred horse racing for nearly 160 years.  Perth Racing is a multi-faceted racing, entertainment and event business.  At our two premier metropolitan tracks, Ascot Racecourse and Belmont Park, we host around 95 race meetings every year as well as frequent non-raceday events.

The role

Working in a team with other Track Maintenance Operators, this role is responsible for presenting and maintaining tracks, grounds and racing facilities at Ascot Racecourse and Belmont Park to the highest possible standard. 

This role is a permanent full- time role involving weekend raceday and public holiday work. 

The position has a high demand of physical exertion, long periods of standing and walking and is exposed to all elements of the weather.

Safety in the operations of this position by the individual and towards others is paramount at all times.

Primary duties

  • Mow and irrigate turf tracks and surrounds
  • Shift moveable rail as required and directed 
  • Maintain gardens and grounds
  • Operate and maintain plant & equipment (sweepers, tractors, ride on and push mowers etc.) 
  • Use of forklift, utility vehicles, turf spray equipment and trucks
  • Use of limited range of power tools (drills, brush cutters, blowers etc.)
  • Use of manual tools (shovels, rakes, brooms etc.)
  • Chemical Handling
  • Complete Turf management duties including fertilizing and chemical applications

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Completion of relevant trade certificate (Turf Management Cert III or Horticulture Cert III) or equivalent structured training
  • Current WA C class driver’s licence
  • Chemical Handling Certificate (CHEMCERT)
  • Previous employment in a similar role
  • Use of limited range of power tools such as drills, brush cutters, blowers etc.
  • Ability to complete basic forms (worksheets, checklists, etc.)

Desirable

  • Turf or horticulture experience
  • Horse skills, knowledge or experience
  • Forklift licence
  • LR - HR (Light or Heavy Rigid) licence
  • Work site certificates/tickets such as EWP Certificate, WAH Certificate, First Aid Certificate, SHREPS Training, Mechanics (Machinery maintenance)
