About the Library

State Library Victoria is Australia's oldest public library, and one of the first free public libraries in the world.

We believe in the power of knowledge to change lives. Free to access and open to all, the Library enriches the cultural, educational, social and economic lives of all Victorians.

State Library Victoria preserves and shares the stories of Victoria and the world, and is a major destination for stimulating cultural experiences, contemporary debates, and community-driven collecting. We encourage learning, exploration, imagination, and creativity, opening up possibilities for all Victorians.

About the Opportunity

The Head of Audience Engagement leads the design and delivery of inclusive and impactful experiences for library audiences of all ages, across multiple forms of engagement. This includes exhibitions and major cultural events, thought-provoking lectures, creative workshops and behind-the-scenes exploration, school programs, tours, and research fellowships.

Following the recent $88.1 million transformation of the library spaces, State Library Victoria's four-year Strategic Plan aims to find new and innovative ways to engage with visitors and stakeholders, embrace new technologies and support the Library's financial resilience and ongoing relevance for communities of Victoria as a must-do destination and an active voice for learning, knowledge and culture.

Our engagement activities support this strategy by building awareness of and connection with the Library, fostering learning and the creation of new work, and increasing our reach and impact for First Nations people, rural and regional Victorians, and early-stage business founders.

Reporting to the Director Experience, the role is a member of the Library's senior leadership team and collaborates with colleagues across the organisation.

The Head of Audience Engagement leads four teams: Exhibitions, Creative Programs, Production Management and Exhibitions Production. In addition, the role leads supporting management of the education programs.

About You

The ideal candidate is an experienced senior people leader with a strong working knowledge of specific artform and sector expectations for the requirements of exhibitions, event programming and production operations.

In addition, you will come to us with:

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline or equivalent work experience.
  • Demonstrated senior leadership experience in the cultural sector or a related field.
  • A solid track record of leading and motivating staff to deliver quality operational output, preferably in a multidisciplinary organisational setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in senior stakeholder management, including building strategic relationships with key sector partners in a similar, complex environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and overseeing successful initiatives, programs or strategies to engage with stakeholders in the broader community is desirable.

State Library Victoria is a child-safe organisation. A valid Working with Children Check will be required before commencing.

State Library Victoria promotes a workplace that actively seeks to welcome and value the unique contributions of all people.
