Boral’s prized upstream cement business is an important supplier for our downstream business which produces concrete, the second most used substance in the world after water. Cement and concrete are in ever increasing demand within Australia as the population grows and the demand for infrastructure remains. Boral Cement take a long-term view to ensure a viable supply of various inputs critical to the cement manufacturing process. Reporting to the Executive General Manager (EGM) – Cement, the Head of Strategyand International Raw Material Acquisition is responsible for strategic sourcing of critical Raw Material inputs including Clinker, Slag and Gypsum and other related products, as well as associated shipping import activities. Gaining a deep understanding of the Raw Material Acquisition landscape will inform the strategic direction of the Cement business which is the other key focus of the role. This is not a procurement role and rather has a dual focus on business unit strategy and International Raw Material Acquisition.

Your day will involve: 

  • Supporting the Cement business in a strategic advisory capacity and having a tangible impact on the growth of the Cement business by providing thought leadership and strategic support to facilitate decision making at senior management and EGM level.
  • Working closely with our Procurement function, who will undertake sourcing activities as the SME, you will develop commercial relationships with suppliers on a global level and have accountability for the supply of Raw Materials from suppliers in various international locations ensuring optimal quality, reliability and consistency of product.
  • Developing a deep understanding of markets for Raw Materials as well as the as the challenges and impediments that impact business, ensuring that Boral is not exposed to operational, geopolitical, supply chain and technical risks.
  • Working closely with Head of Strategy and Capital, you will be responsible for advising the EGM and recommending the strategic direction for the Cement business in terms of de-carbonisation and sustainability, network and footprint, channel to market, external competitive environment, process improvement, growth and optimisation. 
  • Integrate analysis and insights into building out creative solutions and actionable plans that will enhance growth and sustainability.
  • Size and scope the business import requirements with Sales & Operational Planning.
  • Monitor competitor import activity and data for volumes, sources, pricing and utilise the information to inform tactical and strategic decisions.
  • In conjunction with the EGM, develop recommendations for new sources and enhancements to existing products to ensure that current and future market and customer needs are met.
  • Optimise sourcing and identify value adding opportunities in revenue and cost through the application of insightful financial analysis tools and integrate into operational decision making.

What are we looking for? 

  • Strategy, operations or supply chain experience from within a heavy industrial environment
  • Any exposure to the cement industry will be highly regarded but is not essential
  • Strong stakeholder collaboration experience (Procurement, Sales, Operations) with demonstrated experience leading and managing people and projects at a senior level
  • Commercial and contract management skills
  • Strategic and commercial acumen with strong learning agility, superior analytical skills and structured problem solving approach
  • Tertiary degree in engineering, business, logistics or similar
  • Post graduate business/management qualifications, MBA desirable

About Boral Cement

At Boral, we supply up to 4 million tonnes of cementitious products through our Berrima Clinker & Cement Manufacturing, Maldon Cement Grinding & Packaging, Marulan South Limestone Mine & Manufacturing, and Geelong Cement Grinding Operations. Boral Cement is working towards reducing carbon emissions by replacing 60% of fossil fuel in its manufacturing process with lower carbon alternative fuel.
