About Brisbane 2032

The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games (the Games) will be the largest event in South-East Queensland’s history, with the potential to deliver transformational change to our region. As the name suggests, the Brisbane Organising Committee for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games (Brisbane 2032) is responsible for organising the Games. Some of Brisbane 2032’s operational responsibilities include: raising revenue through sponsorship, ticketing and the sale of Brisbane 2032 merchandise, sourcing the goods and services required to deliver the Games, managing the temporary overlay and operation of the venues and recruiting thousands of volunteers as well as many other elements that are essential in staging a world class global sporting event.

About the Position

Reporting to the Chief Impact Officer, the Head of Sustainability will work in close collaboration with Brisbane 2032 internal functional areas, Games Delivery Partners, the IOC Sustainability team and others responsible for delivering the sustainability objectives for the Games.

The main responsibilities are as follows:

  • Lead the delivery of IOC’s sustainability requirements required by the Host Operational Requirements and reporting frameworks
  • Lead the delivery of the sustainability function for Brisbane 2032 and alignment with the Legacy Strategy
  • Collaborate to integrate sustainability across a complex governance framework and broad range of internal and external stakeholders
  • Establish productive and collaborative working relationships with relevant stakeholders including internal functional areas such as finance, communications and delivery, Games Delivery Partners, industry and local communities.
  • Establish a sustainability event management system (SMS) for Brisbane 2032 to support continuous improvement and governance integration, across organisational policies, procedures, guidelines and other tools..
  • Lead the development and delivery of strategies, plans and initiatives to deliver the Brisbane 2032 sustainability priorities, including circular economy and emission reduction, sustainable sourcing and resource management, mobility and sustainable infrastructure.
  • Develop and implement reporting frameworks to monitor progress, support decision-making and ensure timely delivery of Brisbane 2032 sustainability reporting throughout the project.
  • Support key members of the Brisbane 2032 team managing sustainability-related communications and messaging.
  • Plan and coordinate meetings, workshops and site visits.
  • Develop and deliver initiatives to ensure Brisbane 2032’s management of environment, social, and governance related risks and opportunities.
  • Engage collaboratively with senior leaders across the organization to develop and maintain high quality data for use in internal and external sustainability reporting and disclosure including inputs for carbon accounting and carbon neutrality activities.
  • Collate and prepare required annual reporting for inclusion in the Annual report and other public disclosure of all ESG disclosures, progress and benchmarks.
  • Lead, in collaboration with Procurement, annual supplier carbon reduction assessments.
  • Manage the development and maintenance of ESG stakeholder training, engagement and communications.
  • Manage relationships within key stakeholders, including the International Olympic Committee and International Paralympic Committee and all government partners on sustainability related matters.

About You

The ideal candidate will bring the below experience & competencies:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in one of the following: sustainability, environmental studies or similar field. Post-graduate degree(s) for the above areas is an asset.
  • Having developed a sustainability function within a major, multi-sport event environment or similar will be highly regarded
  • Experience in integrating sustainability requirements in processes and procedures across an organisation's business, including familiarity with and/or experience in working within the frameworks of Sustainability event management systems such as ISO 20121 (Event Sustainability Management Systems – Requirements with guidance for use).
  • Significant experience in the management of complex, multi-stakeholder environmental and sustainability projects.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in working with international standards and conventions such as the AA1000 Stakeholder Engagement Standard, ISO 20400 Sustainable Procurement Guidance, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change – Sports for Climate Action Framework, GHG Protocol, and 6 Star green-building scheme.
  • Experience working on policy, programs, projects and initiatives across topics such as climate change and carbon management, sustainable building certification, circular economy strategies, including sustainable sourcing and resource/waste management strategies, water management, energy, environmental compliance/pollution, biodiversity and environmental justice.
  • Experience in reporting against international standards such as Global Reporting Initiative sustainability reporting standards and the UN sustainable development goals (SDGs).
  • Proven track-record in fostering, building and maintaining relationships with subject matter experts and/or stakeholders, both domestically and internationally.
  • Familiarity with the wider social-economic and environmental context of the host region and main stakeholder organisations is desirable.
  • Knowledge of, and relationships with industry-leading organisations driving innovative sustainability initiatives.
