Position Information
Newcastle High School is a large, inclusive and diverse comprehensive school, situated on two sites in the centre of the City of Newcastle. The Parkway Avenue site is in Hamilton South and caters for students from Year 7 through to Year 12, with a diverse, mainstream curriculum.
The Cooks Hill Campus site is on Laman and Union Streets and delivers an alternative curriculum in partnership with Big Picture Learning Australia and caters for 136 students from Year 9 through to Year 12, with 7% of students identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander. The Head Teacher: Teaching and Learning (Deputy Campus Leader) position is situated at the Cooks Hill Campus site. Each student at Cooks Hill Campus develops their own personalised interest projects based on their passions and interests, engages in Learning Through Internship and is assessed through authentic student exhibitions.

Selection Criteria
Applicants must satisfy the teacher training and academic qualification requirements for this position. In addition to the general selection criteria,
1. Demonstrated capacity to lead teachers to develop professionally in creating innovative, differentiated learning programs delivering curriculum and cross-curricular priorities that meet the needs of all learners.
2. Proven ability to collaborate and connect with external agencies, mentors and community partners to support students to develop relationships with specialised expert knowledge, to enrich personal projects and student wellbeing.
3. Demonstrated capacity to be a dynamic member of the executive leadership team with evidenced ability and experience in organising daily operations, maintaining compliance systems including timetabling, reporting and administrative processes.
4. Demonstrated ability to develop quality relationships which strengthen inclusivity, Aboriginal cultural perspectives and wellbeing initiatives, whilst enhancing the achievement of individual learning goals.
General Selection Criteria
1. Successful teaching experience with capacity to initiate improvement in teaching, learning and classroom practice
2. Knowledge of curriculum, assessment and student welfare with the ability to lead and design quality, inclusive teaching and learning programs
3. Educational leadership skills to build the capacity and manage the performance of individuals and teams
4. Well developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build relationships and engage students, staff and parents
5. Ability to plan and manage resources effectively and equitably to support teaching and learning
6. Knowledge of and commitment to the Department's Aboriginal education policies
Conditions
An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
Special Notes
"The successful applicant will be permanently appointed to Newcastle High School, with a minimum three year allocation to the Cooks Hill Campus site. After the initial three years, the successful applicant can, continue to teach on the Cooks Hill Campus site, apply through an expression of interest (EOI) process for a vacant teaching position located on the Newcastle High School site, based on their suitability and subject codes, apply for a service or local transfer when they meet the Department’s eligibility requirements.”
