Head Grower

Humphris Nursery, is a successful and leading horticultural wholesale plant nursery, located in the outer Eastern suburbs of Melbourne.

Established in the 1879 and cared for by 6 generations of the Humphris family, we’ve modernised, and evolved towards the market leader that we are today, making us one of the oldest continuously registered wholesale nurseries in Australia, something we’re incredibly proud of.

Humphris Nursery, is a large, evolving wholesale operation, based in Mooroolbark with a team of 120+ individuals, four production sites and a retail facility, located in Victoria throughout the beautiful Yarra Valley. Humphris Nursery is vertically integrated with Tissue Culture, Propagation facilities, a state of the art Richel Indoor Growing facility (2ha), purpose built Cravo Retractable Roof Greenhouse (2ha) and a specialized grafting business unit.

The range of plants grown includes Hydrangeas, Grasses, Indoors/Ferns, Australian Natives, Edibles, Hedging, Grafted, Magnolias, Nandinas, Exotics, Australian Natives and Camellias.

Position Summary

The Head Grower will manage all aspects of the daily growing, with an overall objective of Growing Plants. Better! The Head Grower is responsible for working with each Site Grower to implement typical programmes expected within a wholesale growing nursery and manage the indoor growing environments:

  • Watering
  • Pest and Disease
  • Fertilizer and Herbicide
  • Growth Regulation
  • Plant Health and Maintenance
Experience

Proven experience in a large wholesale nursery, managing a team of growers to deliver the key elements required to successfully grow the range of plants offered by Humphris.

What you will bring:

  • Leadership and experience as a Head Grower
  • Understanding of relevant technology and its use in a modern wholesale nursery
  • Keen eye and attention to detail
  • Ability to maintain comprehensive records of essential growing procedures, attributes and results
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills to interact with team members, senior support personnel, suppliers and customers
  • Ability to multi-task, define and solve problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions necessary to identify a wide variety of conditions such as plant diseases, existence of insects, etc.
  • The ability to deliver the right plants, at the right time, at the right volume at the right quality.

The ideal candidate is reliable, flexible, has a strong work ethic, positive attitude, is highly energetic and will treat the business as their own
