SandMap Pty Ltd  have an excellent opportunity for a fulltime Field Lead Hydrographic Surveyor to join our team.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Contributing to the design and setup of various hydrographic survey projects including cost estimation, equipment and vessel selection, team selection, logistics, quality assurance and procedures, progress reporting, and client liaison.
  • Although the role will generally be broadly supervised by an AHSCP certified Hydrographic Surveyor at a level appropriate to the project, it will require acting autonomously for many projects, leading a team, and often creative thinking to devise solutions to issues encountered in the field, particularly when in remote areas away from outside assistance.
  • Acting as hydrographic survey party leader for a large variety of hydrographic survey projects including multibeam, single beam, side scan, and sub bottom profiling work. Projects may be undertaken in riverine and estuarine waters, inshore, and offshore but may also include lakes and other small standing bodies of water both inland and close to the coast.
  • Act as master of a variety of small survey vessels under 12m including PWC’s.
  • Undertaking all appropriate site checks and ensuring the quality of data is at a high level for every project undertaken.
  • Processing of various types of hydrographic survey data in specialist hydrographic survey software and creation of a wide variety of deliverables as per clients requirements. This includes complex GIS datasets for some projects and will also involve the creation of Python scripts to achieve deliverables and solutions as necessary.
  • Creation and maintenance of work procedures for all tasks and other related administrative tasks.
  • Attend training courses and conferences as required.
  • Continual research into new technology and it’s potential for incorporation into company techniques.

Applicants for this position should:

  • Hold a survey, oceanography or equivalent Bachelor’s degree
  • Have at least 2 years relevant experience
  • Be competent in leading field hydrographic survey teams in acquiring survey data in a variety of situations but mostly related to shallow water survey both inshore and offshore
  • Be competent and experienced in the use of multibeam survey equipment (standard, hybrid and interferometric) and single beam operation
  • Be competent in post processing hydrographic survey data, preferably in Qimera, including bathymetry and backscatter/side scan acquired from multibeam and interferometric equipment
  • Be competent in the use of GIS software including dataset creation and maintenance
  • Be competent in writing Python code for to assist with hydrographic survey and GIS tasks
  • Be competent in creating hydrographic survey plans for surveys to class
  • Be available to work in the field including extended periods away from home for up to 200 days per year, often in remote areas
  • Be able to lead the development of skills of those they have supervision over
  • Be responsible for ensuring quality of day to day survey deliverables
  • Hold a Professional Hydrographic Surveyor certification from the AHSCP or be eligible to apply based on qualifications and experience
  • Hold an AMSA Coxswain’s qualification and recreational PWC licence
  • Be competent as the master of small survey vessels including boats to 12m and PWC’s, particularly in shallow waters and tight confines
  • Have the ability to perform various basic emergency mechanical and electrical tasks on boats, vessels and trailers as necessary to effect repair, particularly in remote areas
  • Have an interest in continual professional development and the desire to investigate new technology
  • Class C (minimum) manual drivers licence and demonstrated experience towing boats up to 3.5T
  • Have the ability to work as a team including periods of living with team members in close quarters
  • Have excellent communication skills and the ability to effectively liaise with clients, team members, members of the public, and government representatives.

Remuneration

Remuneration offered is in accordance with Surveyor Level IV (MA000066 Surveying Award 2020) including a base salary of $76967.
