Anglo American Steelmaking Coal
Steelmaking coal is an essential ingredient in blast-furnace steel manufacture, producing steel used for critical building and infrastructure around the world. In Australia, we operate five steelmaking coal mines in Queensland's Bowen Basin, and have additional joint venture interests in steelmaking coal and manganese, as well as copper exploration projects underway in North West Queensland and Western Australia.
Job Description
Reporting to the Social Performance Manager, as the Indigenous Engagement Specialist you will be a change-maker in Anglo American's transformative journey; lead the way in shaping our commitment towards reconciliation and engagement with First Nations communities.
You will provide expertise to shape and guide SMC's approach to First Nations peoples, Indigenous engagement and reconciliation in a way that fosters meaningful engagement with Indigenous communities and drives initiatives that honours and integrates Indigenous perspectives and knowledge
This role will be rewarding, varied and will include:
  • Advise senior leaders of SMC on our First Nations strategy to ensure all policies and practices are culturally sensitive and aligned with the needs and aspirations of Indigenous communities
  • Develop, implement, monitor and report on SMC's Reconciliation Action Plan
  • Establish and facilitate governance arrangements for SMC's Reconciliation Action Plan including co-chairing the RAP Working Group with the Head of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs
  • Design, implement, monitor and evaluate Indigenous Engagement Plans for each site/complex as required by Social Way 3.0
  • Apply, monitor, evaluate and report results of the Social & Human Rights Risk Analysis (SHIRA) at each site/complex as a requirement of Social Way 3.0
  • Advise site-based teams on the implementation, monitoring and reporting of Cultural Heritage Management Plans/Agreements as required by Social Way 3.0
  • Advise on, co-ordinate and facilitate the relationship between Traditional Owners, Indigenous communities, organisations and leaders and SMC and the sites/complexes
  • Design and deliver SMC cultural awareness training programs to the workforce and stakeholders
  • Support the Head of Sustainability and Corporate Affairs to drive integration of culturally sensitive strategies, policies and programs across SMC and to promote understanding and appreciation of Indigenous cultures, histories and contemporary issue within SMC
  • Identify opportunities in SMC for collaboration and partnership with Indigenous stakeholders
Qualifications
To perform this role effectively, a first-hand understanding of First Nations culture is required
Some of your skills will include:
  • Demonstrated experience in managing and implementing reconciliation action plans
  • Advanced skills in stakeholder engagement and relationship management
  • Competent in all aspects of project management including budgeting, contracting, documentation and reporting.
  • Competent in social risk and impact assessment and management
  • Ability to work collaboratively with cross functional colleagues
  • Foundational skills in monitoring and evaluation of project outcomes and impact
