Industrial Officer, Trainee - United Firefighters' Union Queensland
ABOUT THE ROLE
Applications are sought for the position of trainee Industrial Officer to work with United Firefighters’ Union of Australia, Union of Employees, Queensland (the UFUQ). Remuneration will range between $75,000 and $85,000 on commencement based on qualifications, skills and experience (your salary will be reviewed after 12 months). The UFUQ also pays 15% superannuation.
As an Industrial Officer (trainee) you will develop your skills and knowledge to work towards (if successful) performing these duties unassisted in a mentored process over 12 months, providing –
- a pathway for individuals who are interested in a trade union Industrial Officer role, including those already working in the union movement who seek to transition from an organising role or inbound contact centre role into fulltime industrial relations work,
- the opportunity to develop comprehensive knowledge of UFUQ member’s terms and conditions of employment,
- the opportunity to develop the skills necessary to begin to advocate for and represent member’s industrial rights, working with the state office Industrial Officers as you learn these skills,
- at the conclusion of your training, you will be performing the role of an Industrial Officer, including representing and advocating for members, policy development, attending industrial tribunals, researching and preparing reports on a range of industrial issues.
AS A TRAINEE INDUSTRIAL OFFICER, YOU WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR:
- receiving all incoming requests for assistance by UFUQ members on a daily basis,
- using the membership database, forms, and guidance and training, collating the required information relating to each request for assistance, to ensure the member’s request can best be managed and resolved (either by the trainee Industrial Officer through a guided mentoring and development process, or by one of the state office Industrial Officers),
- researching industrial relations laws and terms and conditions of employment to better facilitate the trainee Industrial Officer’s functions,
- working with elected officials and rank and file members to further develop knowledge and skills required for the role.
AS A TRAINEE, YOU WILL BE PROVIDED WITH:
- Daily on-the-job assistance and training as required, along with more formal training relevant to the role,
- Personal mentoring by the State Office Industrial Officers and the UFUQ Executive,
- Twice weekly meetings with the Senior Industrial Officer to track workload and progress, and to refresh goals,
- Monthly evaluation and feedback sessions with the Senior Industrial Officer and the UFUQ Executive regarding performance and identifying professional development opportunities,
- Encouragement to develop personal capacity, passion for the role and industrial relations.
The expectation is that as a trainee Industrial Officer you will develop your knowledge and skills with the view to transitioning into a permanent Industrial Officer role at or within 12 months of commencement of employment.
As the successful candidate for this position, you’d be based in the West End, Brisbane office of the UFUQ on a full-time basis, working within a small but highly effective team of Industrial Officers supporting the senior UFUQ executive and all members.

- Tertiary qualification/s.
