About the role
This is a rare opportunity to join NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and contribute to the protection of the natural environment and Aboriginal and historical heritage in the Blue Mountains Branch.
As an Information and Retail Assistant, you will play a key role in the NPWS Hartley Historic Site team who are responsible for supporting a dynamic visitor centre and tourist attraction located on the western edge of the Blue Mountains near Lithgow. The role provides frontline visitor support and customer service for the team and is responsible for managing and promoting visitor attractions and experiences on-site and in the area including walks, campgrounds, venue hire, exhibitions, tours and accommodation. You will respond to customer enquiries and promote activities, facilities and services within the area. You will need to have a genuine interest and willingness to learn about the historic heritage and national parks. Please note you must be available to work weekends, public holidays and peak periods.
About you
To be successful in the role, you will have:
- Experience acting independently on matters relating to the entry of visitors to the national park where supervisors are not readily available.
- Experience in exercising excellent customer service and negotiation skills as well as sound people and diplomatic skills to deal effectively with cultural differences or limited English skills.
- Capacity and willingness to undertake enforcement duties associated with the park use fee system and Environment, Energy and Science/NPWS Regulations, with an ability to work unsupervised and adapt to competing priorities.
About the Branch
The Blue Mountains Branch manages 73 parks and reserves, including the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area. We protect many threatened plants and animals, such as the only known grove of Wollemi Pines, and several highly significant Aboriginal Places.
Every year, more than 8 million people visit our iconic locations, like the Three Sisters or Govetts Leap, or heritage-listed historic sites, like Hill End and the Wombeyan Caves. We manage over 400 km of iconic walking tracks, 40 campgrounds and 175 lookouts.
Essential requirements
- Experience in a retail environment including dealing with customer enquiries in a reception or frontline service area, cash handling procedures and using digital booking software.
- A current Working with Children Check (WWCC) is an essential requirement for this role. The role has been identified as requiring this check in line with the Child Protection (Working With Children) Act 2012.
- Ability to work outside of normal working hours and on weekends and public holidays if required.
- A current Australian drivers licence and first aid certificate or willingness to obtain one.
Please note:
- For this particular role, a Drivers Licence is essential, but a manual driver’s licence is not.
- For this particular role, there is no requirement to undertake enforcement duties or the ability to operate a two-way radio.
- The holder of this role will be required to wear an NPWS uniform.
- This role may also involve regular evening and weekend work. This is a 5/7 rostered worker shift-based position, under the Crown Employees Award (Public Service)
