Our journey

The Victorian Heart Hospital will be Australia’s first dedicated heart hospital and is nearing its final stages of construction. It will include a full range of ambulatory and inpatient cardiac care, including cardiac theatres, cardiac catheterisation laboratories, emergency, intensive care, and ambulatory services such as cardiac CT, echocardiography and specialist consultation. It will also feature a unique, patient centred model of care. The Victorian Heart Hospital will also play a key role in advancing research and teaching and will be home to the Victorian Heart Institute, a brand new, health and medical research organisation at Monash University.

As a Monash Health hospital, the Victorian Heart Hospital will be uniquely positioned to provide tailored cardiovascular care for all Victorians, and specialised life-saving procedures for our community. Upon completion, Australia’s first cardiac hospital will deliver a new Monash Health standard in model of care and patient care experience.

As the first cardiac facility in Australia the Victorian Heart Hospital will house 3 purpose-built cardiac theatres, catering for a large range of cardiac surgeries. The Instrument Technician (Grade 5) at the heart hospital is a truly enviable and historic career opportunity to play a role in ensuring the Centralised Sterilisation Services (CSS) at the heart hospital are delivered to the highest level of patient and family centred care within a framework of multidisciplinary collaboration, efficiency, effectiveness, safety, innovation, and education. A day in the life

We guarantee that no two days will be the same!

As the Senior Grade 5 Instrument Technician you will help to deliver high quality care and key responsibilities will include:
  • Thermal disinfection inspection, packaging, and sterilising of all instrumentation for theatre and other clinical areas
  • Comply with AS/NZ standards 4187 2014 and associated EN and ISO standards, GENCA
  • Operate interpret and document all machinery operational requirements
  • Report and document all quality activities
  • Ensure priority of instrumentation and processes
You will also be responsible for:
  • Providing managerial and administrative support to the Department Manager by assisting in supervision, education, and training of junior instrument technicians, whilst monitoring the provision of quality and service to all areas of the positions scope of practice
  • Working in all areas of the department autonomously, demonstrating a high level of proficiency and competency in accordance with Australian Standard 4187:2014 guidelines. Providing efficient, safe and professional services to all stakeholders in a patient focused environment through effective and committed teamwork
  • Ensuring that a high quality of patient care is always provided in line with the Monash Health iCARE values
  • Assisting in ensuring the equipment is maintained in excellent working order, that there are sufficient consumables available in the department and that Sterilising Services quality control checks are conducted periodically
  • Supporting the Nurse Manager and Grade 5 technicians, lead by example and model the values of Monash Health and the culture of Patient and Family Centred Care

What You Bring

As the SSU Instrument Technician you will bring the following skills, experience and knowledge:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of instrumentation
  • Completion of Certificate III in Sterilisation Services
  • Sound knowledge of AS/NZ 4187 2014
  • Experience with tracking systems
  • Endoscopy reprocessing experience or willingness to learn
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Exceptional organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Intermediate computer literacy skills - including MS office and various data bases
  • An interest in promoting best practice patient care
  • A focus on professional development
  • Ability to work across a 7-day week all shifts including night shift and public holidays
  • Certificate III sterilisation
  • For Grade 4 role certificate IV sterilisation
