The Australian Refugee Association Inc. (ARA) is a community-based organisation providing settlement, migration, and other forms of assistance to refugees, migrants and other people of concern.

As a member of our team, you will be supporting new arrivals in South Australia to achieve their social, economic, cultural and community participation goals. You will be making a difference in the lives of individuals and families as they re-establish themselves in a new home.


The Intake & Triage Coordinator plays a crucial role in facilitating the smooth intake and triage process for individuals seeking assistance. This position requires exceptional organizational skills, empathy, and a strong understanding of the challenges faced by refugees. Key responsibilities and main tasks include:

  • Managing the intake process for new clients, ensuring all necessary documentation is completed accurately and efficiently.
  • Conducting initial assessments to determine the immediate needs of clients and assigning them to appropriate services within the organization.
  • Coordinate client access to Emergency Relief funds with support from case workers, ensuring appropriate records are maintained and forms completed for approval by the Settlement Case Work Team Leader or Client Service Programs Manager.
  • Liaising with internal teams to ensure that clients are connected with the most suitable resources and support programs.
  • Coordinating with external agencies and service providers to advocate for clients' needs and facilitate their access to essential services.
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive client records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Providing support and guidance to clients as they navigate through various systems and processes.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of intake procedures by identifying areas for enhancement and implementing best practices.

The Intake & Triage Coordinator plays a pivotal role in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for individuals seeking settlement support, contributing significantly to their successful integration into Australian society.


The ideal candidate for this role is empathetic, resourceful, and able to work effectively in a multicultural environment. The Intake and Triage Coordinator should possess strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and a commitment to social justice.

Qualifications:
  • A Diploma of Community Services (or similar), with greater than 3 years relevant professional experience.
Required skills
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to handle high-stress situations and remain calm under pressure
  • Proficient in using relevant computer software and databases for data management
  • Understanding of the Australian refugee support system and services available
  • Fluency in languages commonly spoken by refugees in Australia is an advantage
Required experiences
  • Prior experience in intake and triage coordination, preferably within a refugee support organization or similar setting
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting thorough assessments and providing appropriate referrals for individuals with complex needs
  • Experience working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders, such as government agencies and community organizations
  • Proven track record of maintaining accurate records and reports related to client interactions and service provision
  • Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles and practices when working with individuals from refugee backgrounds
Special Conditions
  • Must have evidence of Australian residency or right to work in Australia.
  • Must have a current and valid Working With Children Check that shows you are able to work with children in South Australia.
  • Must have or be willing to obtain a Child Safe Environment training certificate.
  • Must be willing to participate in training and development opportunities as part of continued professional development.
  • Must hold a current driver's licence.
  • Must own a roadworthy vehicle that is registered and has minimum third party property insurance and be able to use this for work purposes.
  • Must be willing to work in various locations within the metropolitan area.
  • Must be willing to participate in occasional after hours work.

The successful candidate will receive ongoing support from a diverse team and access to ongoing professional development opportunities and will form part of ARA’s growing Client Services Team.

This new role is being offered full-time on a fixed term to June 2025, although a 0.8 FTE part-time option would be considered for the right candidate. The role is classified as Level 5 under the SCHADS Industry Award. ARA is a Public Benevolent Institution and able to offer salary packaging benefits.
