Your Opportunity

As the Laboratory Assistant you will be responsible for providing technical support to teaching areas within the Nursing Team and contribute to the operation of the organisation’s laboratories to enable them to be used efficiently, effectively and in accordance with legislative requirements by a variety of class groups.

This position reports to the Clinical Laboratory Manager.

This is a Temporary, Part-time (0.2FTE – 7.6 hours, Wednesdays), opportunity to cover planned leave to 29 November 2024 unless otherwise determined.

The position will be based primarily at South Brisbane however you may be required to perform work at other TAFE Queensland campuses.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the success of transformation and cultural change through promoting and modelling the established values of Safety First, Working Together, Focussing on our Customer, Taking Responsibility and Showing Initiative. 
  • Live a safety culture, lead by example and support the Health Safety and Environment Management System to create a TAFE Queensland Brisbane-wide safety culture
  • Provide nursing laboratory services  to staff and students of the unit to enable teaching objectives to be achieved.
  • Set up, service, dismantle and store healthcare apparatus and materials for practical classes, and pre-run scenarios to ensure effective operation.
  • Assist laboratory staff with the safe use of equipment and materials to classes and provide assistance to both staff and students in the use of more sophisticated instruments and equipment.
  • Maintain materials and equipment and dispose of any hazardous materials, in accordance with Australian Standards.
  • Maintain nursing laboratories in a clean and tidy state, including necessary cleaning of equipment.
  • Ensure necessary consumables are available for class use, including stocktaking and organisation of the stores.
  • Monitors, supports, assists and ensures that WHS Australian Standards are adhered to within the laboratory environment.
  • Contribute to the achievement of TAFE Queensland Brisbane’s quality policies by encouraging an environment 

How you will be assessed

Within the context of the role description above, the ideal applicant will be someone who has the following key capabilities:

  1. A demonstrated knowledge of healthcare practices, as evidenced by previous experience within a teaching laboratory or nursing environment. 
  2. Knowledge of workplace health and safety legislation and Australian Standards as they apply in a laboratory environment.
  3. Knowledge of the use, calibration and maintenance requirements of equipment and instruments used in nursing laboratories. 
  4. Proven ability to work as part of a team while remaining flexible and adaptable to organise and prioritise own workload and apply well developed organisational skills to tasks or projects.
  5. High level of communication and client service skills to work collaboratively with stakeholders and colleagues to achieve outstanding client service.

Mandatory Qualifications/Requirements

  • There are no mandatory requirements for this role.

Highly Desirable Requirements

  • Healthcare qualification - Certificate III and above (or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 2 years recent and relevant industry experience.
  • Basic skill and application in the Microsoft Office Suite.
