About the Role

The Laboratory Officer will be responsible for supporting teaching and research laboratories within the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Melbourne, Dookie campus.

The Laboratory Officer position entails providing expert technical support to academic staff and students, overseeing laboratory resources, and ensuring compliance with chemical safety standards. Reporting to the manager, the role collaborates with other Laboratory Officers, contributes to project work for process improvement, and assists in developing systems for enhanced service delivery, all without involvement in research activities.

Laboratory Officers are based at the Faculty’s Parkville, Werribee and Dookie campuses. The primary location of the position will be at the Dookie campus, however, the position may be expected to work from and attend other sites and campuses from time to time if required.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Provide technical support for teaching activities by coordinating and maintaining the planning, preparation, setup, and pack down for classes, in particular practical classes in laboratories.
  • When required contribute to the development of practical classes and provide advice on practical student activities in the laboratory facilities.
  • Organise and collect specimens, samples, and materials for practical classes, when required.
  • Provide proficient technical expertise and advice to academic staff and postgraduate students on appropriate procedures, and the use of equipment and reagents, for laboratory, glasshouses and other field-based teaching and research activities.

Who We Are Looking For
You will possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, adept at developing service improvement systems and delivering high-quality customer service to diverse individuals. Additionally, excellent written communication and organisational abilities, including meticulous attention to detail and effective time management, will ensure consistent and timely task completion without direct supervision.

You will also have:

  • A relevant degree or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Demonstrated knowledge, expertise and experience in scientific procedures and safe operation and troubleshooting of relevant equipment in a teaching or research facility particularly with regards to the application of chemistry and/or biology in the disciplines of plant, animal, microbiological, food or soil science.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of, and experience in health and safety, especially with respect to chemical hazard management in laboratories, glasshouses and in the field as well as an understanding of good laboratory and field practices including Standard Operating Procedure development and documentation

This role requires that the successful candidate must undergo and maintain an up-to-date Working with Children Check. This is essential to guarantee a secure environment for all individuals at the University. In the case the selected candidate doesn't have a valid Working with Children Check, they will be able to apply for the WWCC as part of the initial onboarding procedures.
