The Opportunity

The Te Ahu a Turanga: Manawatū Tararua Highway Alliance is a major undertaking in the Manawatū region, to replace the 2017 slip-damaged Manawatū Gorge.  Once complete, the project will provide a much-needed link through the ranges, and will mean travelling through the area will be much safer. Consisting of 11.5km of new 4-lane road, 5 million cubic metres of earthworks, and 6 bridges, the project will provide employment opportunities in the region over the life of the project through to 2024.

The Te Ahu a Turanga Alliance consists of Waka Kotahi - NZTA, Local Iwi, Fulton Hogan, HEB Construction, Aurecon, and WSP.

We are looking for people to be Field/ Laboratory Technician.  Based on site you will provide an essential role in ensuring the project is completed on time with quality, while working with the wider construction team in the office and will be an integral part of the team as we build this project.  With a large team of experienced constructors you will gain extensive knowledge and experience while doing your work, which will enhance your CV and boost your career progression.

The opportunity

As a Laboratory Technician, you will be involved in the daily operations of the project laboratory in conjunction with the Senior Laboratory Supervisor and Laboratory Manager whilst ensuring continuation of IANZ requirements.

Your responsibilities will include

  • Sampling and testing of civil engineering construction materials – aggregates, soils and asphalt.
  • Providing accurate and punctual recording, analysing and reporting of results to clients.
  • Following all work instructions and test methods in accordance with IANZ and other standards.
  • Maintaining all equipment in good operating condition.
  • Undertaking safe and methodical work practices at all times.

The skills we’re after

  • We are really open to the type of experience you might have however construction industry experience of some sort would be an advantage as would be a class 2 license but these skills are not essential.
  • Be physically fit to carry out demanding physical testing and lifting of test samples
  • Accuracy and a strong attention to detail – you’ve got the ability to follow laboratory methods and SOPs.
  • Willingness to learn with a desire to increase personal technical knowledge.
  • Strong communication skills, crucial for results reporting and client interaction.
  • Can do and a positive attitude with a desire to work in a laboratory environment and outside on site
  • Ability to build good relationships with the constructors on site
  • Ability to accurately record data, and enter and retrieve data using computerized QA systems. 
  • Understand and embrace our living safely approach to your safety and your colleagues.
  • Be able to work flexible hours, including overtime and some weekends (where required in the summer earthworks peak which is typically one Saturday every 3 weeks)
  • Meet and exceed customer expectations & be a team player
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Be self-motivated & driven to succeed.

This is a permanent, full time position with a minimum of 40 hours per week.
