Lawyer – Commercial Litigation

MV Law, one of Canberra’s largest independent law firms, boasts an impeccable reputation for legal services for clients spanning across various disciplines. We are currently seeking an experienced Lawyer with a minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience in the Commercial Litigation area to be a key member of our busy and successful Team. 

This role provides the right person with excellent growth opportunity to advance your career in an established practice, working for great clients and within a collaborative team. You will initially be working on a wide range of matters including property and construction disputes, general commercial disputes, insolvency matters, defamation and media law, and administrative review of government decisions to name a few, but you will also have the opportunity to specialise in any area of specific interest to you. You will work collaboratively with a team who are strongly bonded by their individual talents, cohesiveness and drive to deliver an exceptional service to their clients.  You will be given plenty of support and on the job training.

Skills & Experience

To be successful in this role, you must have the ability to:-

  • Hit the ground running with litigation matters, including familiarity with court, tribunal and ADR processes
  • Undertake research at an efficient pace and with an analytical mind 
  • Analyse facts and prepare advices
  • Prepare court documents including pleadings and submissions
  • Take statements and prepare evidence
  • Be an effective advocate, including appearing in courts and tribunals, representing clients in alternative dispute resolution processes, and negotiating effectively with other solicitors
  • Interpret contracts and draft deeds of settlement and release
  • Work across multiple industries
  • Communicate exceptionally well and build relationships
  • Effectively scope matters including preparing costs proposals
  • Manage client demands and expectations in an empathetic manner
  • Work well under pressure and with conflicting priorities
  • Have a proactive approach to project management of your matters
  • Mentor and coach junior staff members
