Purpose of the Position:
The Lead Electrical Design Engineer is responsible for a team of electrical engineers providing engineering solutions to emerging fleet issues and the introduction of new equipment.  The team is responsible for the installation of new control systems, instrumentation, power electronics and communications equipment whilst maintaining safe, compliant, and reliable freight rolling stock, while also maximising performance and profitability across multiple projects.  They support the team with technical guidance, mentoring and review deliverables prior to release.  They manage the team workload and schedule.    Lead Electrical Engineer is the final compliance signatory for these electrical applications.
 

Qualifications & Training for the role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in your Engineering field, or relevant tertiary qualification with extensive rolling stock or alternative energy experience
  • Membership of a professional institution (e.g. MIEAust) will be highly regarded.
  • Ability to achieve RPEQ status in Queensland will be highly regarded.
  • Meets Rail Safety Worker requirements for the role.

Experience:

  • Experience (5yrs +) in electrical system design.
  • Highly Desirable: Experience (10yrs + preferred) in electrical system design & team leadership
  • Highly Desirable: Knowledge and understanding of rollingstock electronic control system application.
  • Highly Desirable: Detailed knowledge and understanding of rollingstock electrical traction system application.
  • Highly Desirable: Detailed knowledge and understanding of battery energy storage system application.
  • NX CAD/3D design software or similar knowledge is desirable.
  • Good working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of software.

Specific:

Be an active team member in the Design Engineering team in providing;

  • Delivers on engineering design, design change and resolution of technical issues.
  • Provides engineering support for major overhauls / in sourced work. 
  • Supports development of Technical Training Material.
  • Considers whole life costs during all activities.
  • Adhering to all standard practice procedures as outlined in the integrated management system.
  • Reporting all injuries, HSE issues, incidents and hazards immediately.
  • Complying with the requirements of the National Rail Safety Act, with respect to the obligations of Rail Safety Workers where applicable.
  • Complying with all additional instructions given unless it may adversely affect anyone’s health and safety.
  • Playing a positive role in supporting the organisational safety, quality and zero harm culture, which involves promoting and demonstrating safe behaviour and practices, identifying continuous improvement opportunities, reporting accidents and near misses and identifying hazards and unsafe acts.
  • Ensuring individual’s acts or omissions do not affect the health, safety and welfare of others.
  • Conforming to Progress Rail Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE), including Rail Safety Management Systems.
  • Considers safety during engineering design change (ALARP).
  • Explores alternative and creative solutions to meeting the needs of the customer.
  • Delivers to customer expectations and service standards, in the areas of timeliness, information transfer, availability and reliability.
  • Provides expert technical information and / or reports to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensures that engineering change does not compromise the compliance of the rolling stock to workplace or rail safety requirements.
