About the opportunityWe are seeking to appoint a full-time, continuing level HEO 8 Lead Laboratory Analyst based in the Analytical Laboratories of the Centre for Ore Deposit and Earth Sciences (CODES; https://www.utas.edu.au/codes) in the School of Natural Sciences (https://www.utas.edu.au/natural-sciences), which is part of the College of Sciences and Engineering.CODES Analytical Laboratories currently employ five full-time and five part-time staff. The Laboratories operate four laser ablation-ICPMS units, a clean sample preparation laboratory and dedicated ICPMS unit for solution analyses, a fully equipped lapidary laboratory, WDS-XRF, portable XRF and bulk XRD instruments. The Laboratories play a dual role, being simultaneously a research unit within the Analytical Research Program of CODES, and a service unit, which supports the main CODES research projects through allowing CODES staff and students, CODES academic and industry partners and collaborators, and other external users, to perform geochemical analyses using the methods developed within the R&D program of the Laboratories. The LA-ICPMS equipment includes 4 RESOlution S-155 laser microprobes, two Agilent 8900, two Agilent 7900, and one Tofwerk icpTOF-R mass spectrometers.What you'll do:
  • Support in providing leadership to the laboratory team, with responsibility for employment, performance, induction, training, and overall workload management in conjunction with the Manager.
  • Be responsible for one of our analytical laboratories, including the operation of one LA-ICPMS unit consisting of a quadrupole ICPMS and an excimer laser microprobe.
  • Develop and maintain awareness of the capacity, capability, and operation of all other LA-ICPMS facilities in CODES Analytical Laboratories.
  • Assist the Manager with overseeing the maintenance, repair, and replacement scheduling for all laboratory equipment.
  • Provide expert technical advice and leadership to internal users on the application of the instrumentation to geological problems and on data processing.
  • Train staff and research students on the operation of the equipment.
What we're looking for:
  • A Ph.D. in Geology, Geochemistry, or related discipline or relevant equivalent experience, with extensive experience in the geochemical analysis of rocks and/or minerals.
  • Experience in independently operating and maintaining LA-ICPMS analytical equipment.
  • Demonstrated experience in, or capability to participate in, LA-ICPMS analytical method developments.
  • Proven experience with data reduction procedures for LA-ICPMS analytical data, including U-Pb geochronology, sulphide and/or silicate mineral analyses.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to supervise other team members.
  • Experience with training and supervising lab users and devising analytical plans for external partners and collaborators.
Salary detailsAppointment to this role will be at HEO 8 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $143,448 comprising base salary within the range of $107,829 to $122,605 plus 17% superannuation.How to Apply
