Learning and Development Superintendent  

About the role 

Finding better ways to provide the materials the world needs. 

 We are looking for a Learning & Development Superintendent to lead a site-based team responsible for L&D at our Yarwun operations, based in Gladstone.

 This role is a great opportunity to demonstrate your leadership in Learning and Development by developing the frontline capability of one of Rio Tinto’s key alumina assets, improving people experience, developing frontline individuals directly impacting safety and stability of our operations.

Working a 9-day fortnight, Mon-Fri and reporting to the Manager Operational Excellence at Yarwun, you will be: 

  • Responsible for the frontline competency training needs analysis, its design, maintenance, governance and delivery
  • Responsible for the pre boarding to shift ready program and experience across the frontline and the onboarding experience for all newcomers to the refinery 
  • Responsible for continuously improving the approach to competency across the asset
  • Responsible for the design and execution of the assets learning schedule across the asset for both frontline and professional training events 
  • Managing, leading and developing a team of L&D advisors 
  • Building strong partnerships across both the refinery, its sister sites in Gladstone as well as the broader Pacific Operations assets
  • Delivering Learning & Development improvement projects collaboratively across the Pacific Operations Aluminium assets

What you’ll bring 

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Strong leadership capabilities with an ability to build skill within a team and provide succession planning
  • Prior experience in an operational role within Learning and Development or a previous role as a supervisor and looking for your next challenge in this area.
  • Ability to manage performance 
  • Experience in or around operational environments
  • Strong stakeholder engagement capabilities with excellent communication and influence
  • Passion for developing people and processes in organisations

Where you’ll be working

With production beginning in 2004 at our Yarwun alumina refinery, located approximately 10 kilometres north-west of Gladstone in Central Queensland, today the operation produces more than three million tonnes of alumina per year.

Around 700 people support the operation, with an additional 350 contractors on site each year as part of scheduled maintenance shutdown activities. Thanks to its ‘Industry 4.0’ focus, Yarwun is also a leader in trialling new technologies to improve operations on site, including 3D printing, robotics and drones in confined spaces, and is home to Rio Tinto’s innovative Queensland Research and Development Centre (QRDC).
