Job description

Batchelor Institute is the only First Nations dual sector tertiary education provider in Australia. The Institute gives precedence to its philosophy of Both Ways: positioning First Nations peoples as knowledge holders in all educational transactions with Western knowledge systems as well as privileging First Nations ways of learning and teaching to underpin our engagement with mainstream education systems and society more broadly.

The Lecturer Conservation and Ecosystem Management is responsible for the delivery of quality Vocational Education and Training (VET) within the context of Batchelor Institute's role as Australia's leading First Nations Tertiary Education and Research provider.

The Lecturer Conservation and Ecosystem Management is responsible for the development and delivery of innovative VET programs underpinned by the Batchelor Institute Both-ways principles of practice as well as contributing to community engagement and business development within the areas of Creative Industries. In particular, the Lecturer Conservation and Ecosystem Conservation and Ecosystem Management to: Prepare, deliver and evaluate workshop activities and work site requirements.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Demonstrate awareness of basic VET educational theories; determine applicability of theories to the learning needs of individuals and groups and contribute to development of resources and programs based on the Batchelor Institute Learning and Teaching Framework which generates authentic learning experiences and to the design of flexible learning strategies.
  2. Use strategies and skills to ensure learner engagement and achievement of leaning outcomes; create supportive learner inter-relationships; use a range of technologies effectively.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of the principles of assessment and the rules of evidence and contribute to the development of assessment tools, or modify existing ones, to suit learner needs and specified context.
  4. Employ a range of methods to ensure principles of assessment and rules of evidence are met in assessment processes and decisions as well as participate in validation processes.
  5. Liaise with enterprises and community to ensure teaching and assessment reflects current industry practices and community values and aspirations. In addition, participate in enterprise and community networks to enhance own knowledge and skills.
  6. Maintain vocational competency relevant to own subject area; keep up to date with industry changes; participate in relevant industry and community events/networks/consultation.
  7. Contextualize program content and adapt teaching practices to suit specified enterprise needs and community values and aspirations.
  8. Demonstrate ethical behaviour, Batchelor Institute values and regard for confidentiality.
  9. Adapt communication style to suit audience and context; build constructive relationships with colleagues, learners and their communities and generate ideas for improvement.
  10. Understand the Standards for RTO’s 2015 and relevant legislation and ensure compliance in own work practices.

Selection Criteria

Essential:

  1. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in culturally diverse teams within the social, political, and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families, communities, and organisations.
  2. Well-developed knowledge of the social, political, historical, and cultural environments of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as relevant to Vocational Education and Training and demonstrated highly developed capacity to work effectively and communicate appropriately with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, communities, organisations, and staff members.
  3. The successful candidate must possess a relevant vocational qualification at the diploma or degree level combined with a minimum of 3 years Industry/professional/vocational experience.
  4. Additionally, the successful candidate must have the minimum vocational teaching qualification; Certificate IV in Training and Assessment TAE40116 or Diploma or higher-level qualification in adult education.
  5. Demonstrated personal and inter-personal skills for working effectively as a team member to achieve outcomes within an Aboriginal Vocational and Training context as per the above skill area requirements.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of the Standards 2015 and ability to comply with VET management and administration policies, procedures and business rules.
  7. Must be able to undertake travel throughout the Northern Territory by land, sea and air (e.g. in light aircraft), possess a Northern Territory ‘C’ class drivers’ licence with experience driving on unformed roads, and be prepared to stay in a range of accommodation and in various environmental settings available to Batchelor Institute staff.
  8. Understanding of Work, Health and Safety principles and practices, and ability to comply with Institute WHS policies and procedures.

  • Applicants must provide at least one Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander referee.
  • Copies of qualifications and evidence of experience must be submitted.
  • Applicants must have an Ochre Card and a current Police Check and/or the ability to obtain these prior to commencement.
  • The COVID-19 Safety Management Plan and other COVID-19 related information Policy and Procedure require all Batchelor Institute workers to have had a third COVID-19 vaccination. Temporary or permanent exemptions apply in certain circumstances.
