Why Your Role Matters:

The School of Science is seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Mathematics.  The School encompasses the disciplines of Physics & Oceanography, Chemistry, Geography, Aviation and Mathematics & Statistics.  A comprehensive program of Mathematics courses is taught from first through to third year and forms part of a three-year Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Mathematics, or a four-year Honours degree.  A PhD program is also offered. 

The School has strong research profiles in both Bushfire Research and Number Theory.  UNSW Canberra Bushfire Research Group is driving breakthroughs in fundamental and applied research into bushfire behaviour and propagation, including coupled/dynamic effects.  Active areas of research encompass dynamic fire propagation including computationally efficient fire propagation models that incorporate pyro convective feedback, extreme fire development, fuel accumulation modelling, severe fire weather events, stochastic fire behaviour models and bushfire risk at the wildland-urban interface.

Number Theory group studies various properties of integers whose methods are based on intricate blends of algebraic and analytic arguments. Active areas of research encompass additive combinatorics, exponential sums and character sums; classical analytic number theory, including the properties of the Riemann zeta-function, Dirichlet L-functions, and their applications to the distribution of primes and primitive roots.  Further details about the teaching program and research activities of staff can be found at the School web site: http://www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/sci/research .

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs in Mathematics, including supervision of Honours and Postgraduate students. 

They will also be expected to contribute to the School's research program.  The School has a strong research profile in Mathematics with facilities to support computationally intensive modelling and data analysis. A demonstrated ability to undertake an internationally competitive research program in Mathematics is essential, with a particular emphasis on either bushfire behaviour modelling or number theory.  Additionally, the Bushfire Research Group welcomes applicants whose research enhances its expertise in environmental systems, particularly focusing on mathematical modelling of environmental resilience to catastrophic events.  Further details about the teaching program and research activities of staff can be found at the School web site:http://www.unsw.adfa.edu.au/sci/research

Applicants are expected to have a PhD in Mathematics or a closely related field, a demonstrated record of high quality research in applied mathematics or number theory and the ability and willingness to contribute to the teaching program at all levels.  Previous university teaching experience would be an advantage.  Appointment as a senior lecturer requires evidence of qualifications for that level.  Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
