The Role:
Our clients operate a family-owned mixed livestock and fodder enterprise located about 40km west of Melbourne, near the townships of Melton, Werribee, and Geelong. They specialise in irrigated lucerne, Angus/wagyu cross cattle, prime lambs, and agistment. They seek an enthusiastic and innovative individual to join this progressive team in the newly created role of Overseer. This is an excellent career opportunity for the right candidate to work with the Farm Manager to enhance the business's production and profitability. The role comes with significant responsibility and independence, allowing the right candidate to showcase their skills and knowledge in overseeing a large-scale, diverse sheep enterprise.

The two properties are currently running 7,000 ewes and their offspring, 400 Angus Heifers crossed with Wagyu, and 1,000 agistment heifers. Additionally, 300 hectares of winter cropping is carried out in collaboration with a share farmer. The 650-hectare irrigation farm, with 450 hectares currently being irrigated using Class C recycled water, focuses on producing Lucerne hay, fattening lambs, and cattle, and providing agistment for heifers. The scale of operations is substantial, covering a total of 4,431 hectares. As Livestock Overseer, you will work alongside and lead contractors and staff, ensuring that the day-to-day operations of the livestock enterprise are managed within the company's established budgets, quality assurance standards, and workplace health and safety policies.

The successful candidate will be a self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills and will have demonstrated a minimum of three years experience in a similar livestock-focused role.

  • Monitoring livestock health, fences, pasture cover and equipment in relation to the husbandry program.
  • Maintain accurate records of livestock movements, treatments, and work.
  • Adherence to and implementation of OHS policies and safe work practices for staff, contractors, and property visitors.
  • Manage and oversee staff when required.

The Ideal Candidate:
Ideally, you will be someone who has a passion for agriculture, in particular livestock. The ability to develop existing skills and learn new skills is advantageous, and the willingness to work independently or as part of a team is necessary.

The successful candidate must:

  • Be highly skilled and knowledgeable in livestock management, particularly sheep and cattle.
  • Experience in all aspects of general farm maintenance, including fencing and basic machinery operation.
  • Demonstrates high-level OH&S and animal welfare standards.
  • Proactively identify opportunities for new enterprises and growth opportunities appropriate for the property.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work autonomously and make calculated decisions when required.
  • Good time management skills with the ability to plan and prioritise tasks.
  • Contribute a friendly, happy & enthusiastic demeanour to the job and all others associated with the property.
  • Comfortable working across all aspects of farming operations.
  • Have pride in the presentation and tidiness of the property.
  • Have high self-motivation and willing to work independently.

The Offer:
The successful candidate can negotiate a salary based on their skill set. The package includes a work Ute and a comfortable 3-bedroom brick veneer family home. The home has recently undergone some updates inside. It is in an amazing location, 50km from CBD Melbourne, 60km from Geelong, close to Eynesbury, You Yangs Ranges, and Brisbane Ranges, and 15km to schools, services, and shopping centres.
