About the role

The Fitter is responsible to the Chief Engineer when engaged in engineering tasks and ensures tasks allocated to them are carried out in an efficient, safe, and environmentally responsible manner. The vessel is a 110m self-discharging bulk ore carrier located in Karumba Queensland.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

The Fitter/GPH is responsible for:

• The maintenance and repair of ship’s equipment 
• The operation of Wunma cargo machinery & conveyor systems
• Assist the deck department with line handling as required and discharge of cargo operations
• Knowledge of the cargo handling equipment and be trained in its operation 
• Understand the cargo and its hazards and comply with company regulations in its handling
• Carry out duties applicable to your trade qualifications as directed by the Chief Engineer
• Maintain safe work practices in line with company policies 
• Maintain sufficient stocks of materials to carry out your duties in line with projected maintenance programs 
• Maintain your work area in a tidy manner 
• Carry out other duties as directed from time to time, noting that during shipping operations (no maintenance down-time), there will be the requirement to assist with cargo discharge and deck operations 
• Work as directed on vessel maintenance operations
• Learn basic seaman’s techniques and act as part of the crew when the vessel is engaged in operations alongside and at sea
• Participate in fire, man overboard and other drills as and when required.

Qualifications & Experience

Mandatory

• Fluent in English
• Current AMSA medical or the ability to obtain one
• GPH Certificate of Competency
• Mechanical Fitter Trade Qualification 
• Substantial experience in cargo machinery conveyor systems
• MSIC card or the ability to hold one

Highly Desirable

• Experience with Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) 
• Confined Space Ticket 
• MED1 qualification 
• Vessel Technical and/or Operational experience as Marine Fitter 
• Demonstrated knowledge of Quality and Safety Management systems 
• QLD based

Remuneration & Benefits

The employment benefits package is salary plus super, and a notional equal time roster that requires flexibility to meet client requirements. This position will initially be based on a casual contract with a view to permanency for the right candidate.
