Massage Therapist

The Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre (WTRC) is looking for a Massage Therapist to support the holistic objectives of client wellbeing and healing for the Illawarra Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre. 

As the Massage Therapist, you will be responsible for wellbeing, professional care and massage service delivery for clients within the wider context of the healing and recovery objectives at the Centre.

About the Women’s Trauma Recovery Centre:

The Illawarra Women's Trauma Recovery Centre (the 'Centre') is an Australian first community-led initiative, codesigned with women with lived expertise, professional experts and service providers to offer comprehensive and long-term support to women recovering from the trauma of domestic, family and sexual violence (DFSV). Strongly aligned with local, state and national priorities, including The National Plan to End Violence against Women and Children 2022-2032, the Centre will support women to heal from trauma arising from domestic, family and sexual violence, and to improve the long-term health and psychosocial outcomes for women and families.

The Centre is a project of the Illawarra Women's Health Centre. Established in 1986, we are nationally accredited and provide a safe place for women to access specialised high-quality women's medical and health care services. 

We also offer various health and well-being workshops, programs, community-based group activities, and support groups. Our services evolve in response to the needs of women and girls in the region, shaped by evidence of effective practice and local, state, and national policy contexts. Our services and programs are provided at little or no cost to all women in the Illawarra.

Key Responsibilities:

• Create treatment plans for clients using a trauma-informed approach.
• Raise awareness with clients on the benefits of therapeutic massage.
• Evaluate areas of pain in clients and treat accordingly.
• Manage appointment schedules for Centre clients.
• Perform therapeutic massages for our clients to support relaxation, pain management, stress reduction, and relief from muscle tension
• Enhance wellness of our clients by using touch, pressure, and movement using different techniques, and modalities, to achieve program and treatment goals.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation respecting the confidentiality and privacy of clients.

Essential Criteria for the role:

• Appropriate qualifications in massage therapy Current professional membership for massage therapy
• Four+ years of previous experience working as a professional Massage Therapist.
• Demonstrated compassion and empathy for clients.
• Intent listener, and a clear communicator.
• Professionalism, integrity, energy, and stamina.

Desirable Criteria for the role:

• Training in other complementary or alternative healing practices such as cupping, acupuncture, reiki, sound healing
• Experience working with people from diverse communities or lived experience of diversity including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, LQBTQIA+, migrant, culturally and linguistically diverse, neurodivergent and people with a disability.
• Demonstrated understanding of contemporary family, domestic and sexual violence, and the trauma impacts of gendered-based violence and abuse.
