The day to day
The ALS Environmental Division in Newcastle seeks a full-time Laboratory Technician to train as a Phycologist and join a team that strives to exceed client expectations by delivering quality results on time.

The successful applicant will receive on-the-job training in the technical components and procedures of the role, as well as a wide variety of laboratory processes associated with working in a modern Microbiological Laboratory.

Responsibilities include:

  • Preparation and analysis of water and marine sediment samples for a variety of tests throughout, ensuring that analytical procedures and associated tasks are conducted in accordance with the ALS Quality Work Instructions, including QA/QC.
  • Organising designated tasks to maximise daily efficiencies.
  • Completing all tasks and analyses within both the time set down by the supervisor and the relevant analysis standard.
  • Highlighting anomalies in results, sample type, and sample behaviour.
  • Preparation and analysis of microbiological samples.
The Essentials
  • Minimum 2-3 years experience in a similar role desirable but not essential
  • Microbiological experience desired but not necessary
  • Microscopy experience is also highly desirable.
  • Experience with reading microscope slides for Algae and/or cryptosporidium/giardia analysis is desirable but not essential.
  • A desire to work in a high-throughput, customer-focused environment, with preference given to those with previous commercial laboratory experience.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organisational and time management skills.
  • Desire to learn new skills.
  • A strong desire to exceed client expectations by delivering timely, quality results.
  • A genuine interest in the Science Industry, preferably with relevant qualifications within the science field.
  • Proficiency in MS Word and Excel.
