About the Role:

ACT Pathology is a division of the Canberra Health Services with laboratories located at both the Canberra Hospital and North Canberra Hospital operating 24 hours, seven days a week all year round. Pathology provides diagnostic and consultative services to medical specialists and general practitioners and their patients in hospital and in the community.

The Molecular Pathology laboratory is based at the Canberra Hospital laboratory and supports tertiary level investigations in the areas of Molecular Microbiology, ranging from automated commercial assays to a range of in-house assays supporting urgent patient and public health investigations.

ACT Pathology is a participating site for the AusPathoGen program funded by the Medical Research Future Fund which aims to transform public health surveillance and investigation and drive equitable access to pathogen genomics capacity to all jurisdictions in Australia. As part of this program, ACT Pathology has secured funding to support a 12-month project to develop local microbial genomics capacity and investigate the utility of routine whole genome sequencing (WGS) for microbial public health purposes.

The successful applicant will contribute 0.5FTE towards laboratory diagnostic operations (supporting and leading the team, investigation of new methodologies, maintenance and troubleshooting of instrumentation, performance and monitoring of Quality Control, provision of results, and staff professional development) and 0.5FTE towards the AusPathoGen project in close collaboration with other scientists and medical staff involved with the project.

Canberra Hospital Expansion Project – CHS is constructing a new critical services building called ‘Building 5’ which is a 44,000sqm nine storey building specifically designed to deliver state-of-the-art acute clinical services at the Canberra Hospital. Building 5 is the largest healthcare infrastructure project undertaken in the Territory’s history and it represents the largest clinical and operational change program to ever be implemented by Canberra Health Services. Building 5 integrates with a number of existing buildings at the Campus including Building 1 and Building 2, to facilitate a seamless public thoroughfare, patient transportation and back-of-house logistics distribution.

North Canberra Hospital - As of 3 July 2023 Calvary Public Hospital Bruce transitioned to CHS and became North Canberra Hospital. The transition will deliver a health system networked under one provider and will provide increased workforce opportunities for staff at both CHS sites. The ACT Government will be building a new northside hospital on the existing hospital campus in Bruce to meet the growing health care needs of our community, with construction to commence mid-decade providing more beds, increased services, and increased career opportunities.
