The role is hands-on, working in a medical/scientific environment, performing mortuary duties including provision of technical assistance to pathologists with medico-legal autopsies. The Mortuary (Pathology) Assistant in Coronial Services reports to the Mortuary Manager.
Assist in the controlled release of bodies including return of prescribed tissue prior to release; and preparation of bodies for viewing and identification purposes.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:
- Demonstrated autopsy/dissection and/or pathology laboratory experience with proven ability to follow both written and oral instruction with the insight to solve and identify problems through scientific methodology.
- Demonstrated reliability, integrity, and professional attitude necessary for a medico-legal and potentially hazardous workplace.
- Demonstrated high level computer and information technology skills with the ability to learn and use Auslab (case management system), QIS2 (quality system) and Microsoft software or equivalent computer applications within a mortuary environment.
- Demonstrated understanding of relevant legislation and guidelines and their application to a mortuary undertaking medico-legal autopsies.
- Demonstrated sound judgement, ability to think critically, effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the proven ability to work in a team and contribute positively to team outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to proactively maintain a safe, secure and clean mortuary environment and an understanding of and willingness to contribute to the relevant systems, processes and procedures.

- Additional vaccinations including Japanese Encephalitis and Rabies may also be required for this position.
- Valid Queensland Drivers Licence, Class C or equivalent
- Participate in a 24-hour, 7 day a week on call roster to assist with mortuary duties if required.
- Manual dexterity in the wrist and fingers, a steady arm and good near vision are beneficial when assisting in autopsies.
- The physical ability and knowledge of how to move, lift and turn human bodies (remains) and/or portions of bodies including visceral organs for pathological examination would be well regarded.
- You may be required to work in other mortuaries other than Coopers Plains.
