Job description

THF Museum of Health

The aim of the proposed Museum of Health is to bring the historical, cultural, and social stories of our museum’s collection to life so that our region’s history of medicine and healthcare can be preserved for future generations. The Museum of Health is part of the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation. The Foundation’s vision is to create genuine connections that unite our communities and Darling Downs Health to meet the needs and enrich the environments of our hospitals, staff and patients.

The Director Role

The Director is responsible for managing the museum in line with Foundation’s strategic directions. The role includes establishing the Museum, setting the museum’s creative direction, leading its growth and development, and ensuring operational and financial sustainability. Once the Museum is established the role becomes daily operational management, including exhibition management, exhibition design, volunteer management and audience development.

Accountabilities include:

  • Help establish the Museum, setting direction and ensuring operational and financial sustainability.
  • Lead the Museum’s key tasks to research, collect, conserve, interpret and exhibit tangible and intangible health heritage from antiquity in the area now called the Darling Downs.
  • Develop the Museum’s business model, including budget development and management.
  • Optimise and diversify the Museum’s funding sources in collaboration with Foundation staff.
  • Grow, lead and manage a high performing multi-disciplinary team and develop an accountable, growth-oriented culture through effective communication and problem-solving. This includes leading a team of volunteers (Friends of the Museum).
  • Foster partnerships with community and industry stakeholders to raise profile and enhance the reputation of the Museum of Health.
  • Be responsible for the safety, compliance and regulatory requirements of the Museum as a workplace and public facility in accordance with Foundation and State Requirements.

The Successful Applicant

The successful applicant will possess:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualification or relevant, equivalent professional experience.

  • Extensive working knowledge of research and collection management best practices including collection documentation, preservation, and interpretation.
  • Exceptional organisational and project management skills including in budget management.
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to build rapport quickly.
  • The successful applicant will hold a current driver’s licence and current Blue Card – Queensland’s Working with Children Check.
