The Facility
This is a Tertiary and level 3 Teaching Hospital with just under 400 beds and around 1,700 staff. The hospital services a population of 200,000 in a catchment area including urban communities, regional hospitals and remote Aboriginal communities. The hospital is affiliated with Flinders University with an onsite Medical School. There is also the option of working a joint or fractional appointment at the co-located 100 bed Private Hospital. This type of appointment is encouraged and supported and can significantly increase your earning potential.
The Department
This is a busy clinical unit with approximately 1600 deliveries per annum. The delivery rates do not truly reflect the clinical workload. The case mix is varied and includes a high preterm delivery rate (15%) and serious maternal morbidity with diabetes mellitus, renal disease and rheumatic heart disease. The Department is a teaching unit for medical students from the Northern Territory Clinical School, (affiliated with Flinders University of South Australia and James Cook University, Queensland) as well as for Trainees within the RANZCOG training program.
