Job description

About the business

Alford Mining Systems (AMS) is a specialist supplier of research capability, software and services to the mining industry, established in 1999, and in 2016 was acquired by Datamine Software, a subsidiary of Constellation Software Inc which acquires, manages and builds vertical market software businesses that provide mission-critical software solutions.  Our mission is to provide a comprehensive suite of tools for strategy optimisation in underground mine planning.

Through its research programs, AMS has made significant contributions to the development and application of optimisation techniques for mine design. We provide the leading solution for underground mine design optimisation as a headless engine that is integrated into the user interface of the world's major mining software suppliers.

About the role

AMS is seeking an additional person with at least 2-5 years experience with the application of optimization techniques to industrial problems, particularly focused on modeling and techniques in linear, mixed integer or dynamic programming and new advances in constraint programming.

The successful candidate will join a small team in Melbourne that has developed world leading commercial applications in underground mine design and optimization, and will extend the recent work done by our optimization specialists for a new strategy and schedule optimization product.

You will contribute to the ongoing research and development behind the company's products, and engage with suppliers, customers and consultants to define and maintain industry leadership.

The primary development environment for these optimization engines is Microsoft Windows, Visual Studio and Intel C++ with Subversion source code control and IBM CPLEX.

Benefits and perks

  • Work with a close-knit team of leading industry researchers and developers
  • Flexible work arrangements
  • Challenging role with room to apply creativity and innovation for future collaborative industry research and product development
  • Opportunities to engage and collaborate with peers in a wider corporate environment

Essential skills and experience

  • Formal training in operations research and mathematical modeling at Masters or PhD level
  • At least 2-5 years of experience in mathematical modelling and optimization acquired within industry or academia in C, C++ or C#.
  • Familiarity with commercial solvers like CPLEX/OPL or GUROBI, hybrid optimisation techniques, and problem specific heuristics
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a cross functional team

Desirable skills and experience

  • Previous exposure to engineering design and schedule optimization problems in mining will be highly regarded
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, ability to convey rigorous mathematical concepts and considerations to non-experts

 How to apply

Provide a CV that outlines your academic background and industry experience, but also provide a cover letter to introduce yourself and your approach to solving complex problems with advanced optimisation techniques.
