About the facility 

Our major sites include University Hospital Geelong in Geelong's CBD, the McKellar Centre precinct in North Geelong, Barwon Health North in Norlane, and residential aged care facilities spanning the region. Comprehensive mental health, community health and dental services are delivered through various programs across the Barwon South West Region, including Torquay and Colac.

About the Department of Ophthalmology

The Ophthalmology Unit is well supported with 13 Consultants with subspecialty training in Medical and Surgical Retina, Glaucoma, Oculoplastics, Cornea, Oncology, Paediatrics and Strabismus. There are 2 Accredited Registrars with HMO and Orthoptic support.

The Unit provides Ophthalmology services to a large mix of general hospital patients, including accepting Eye trauma/Emergencies from the whole South West region of Victoria providing exposure to a wide range of Ophthalmic conditions.

Full-time Duties (pro rata Part-time) include:

  • three or four unsupervised operating lists per week
  • three or four OPD/Surgical clinics per week
  • sub-speciality interest can be accommodated both in clinics and theatre
  • supervision of junior and senior registrar
  • one in three weeks on-call
  • medical student/optometry student teaching

About the Ophthalmology Fellow Role

Applications are invited from advanced Ophthalmology trainees for a 12 month Full-time General Ophthalmology Fellowship ( 5th year position ) at University Hospital Geelong in 2025. Both part-time and 6 month blocks are considered.

Candidates will be expected to have successfully completed their RACE exams or be a provisional Fellow and be able to operate independently.

If you have the qualifications and aptitude along with excellent interpersonal skills and the commitment to improving patient care, this may be the role for you!

The successful applicants will also assist in general reporting and participate in the roster for after-hours, on-call and recall by the unit.
