Job description

Looking to join the Fraser Coast Regional Council’s TEMPO Outdoor employment pool? Good news! We're opening the skills development training program for 2024.
TEMPO is Council's internal pool of temporary and Casual Employees dedicated to fulfilling placements in outdoor operations, comprising of Roads, Construction, Water, Waste, and Parks.
Are you deeply passionate about your community and want to make a positive impact on the quality of life in our region? We're seeking applicants like you who have a strong drive to enhance public spaces and ability to work safely.
What you should have to apply:

  • Physically fit and have an enthusiasm for working outdoors and undertaking manual work.
  • Open to working as a casual relief team member/operator rotating in various departments as required.
  • Be highly motivated.
  • Outstanding work ethic and a willingness to learn new work methods and undertake training as require.
  • Commitment to teamwork, effective communication, and positive interactions.
  • Ability to adhere to safety protocols and compliance with relevant policies.
  • Queensland general construction induction training card (white card) or equivalent.
  • Be willing to have a police check conducted.
  • Have a current driver's license (or be in the process of obtaining one) or be able to access transport to Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Tiaro, and Oakhurst.
  • Be able to provide suitable proof of identity (e.g. driver's licence, passport, proof of age card etc.)
What to expect from the role:
Undertake various construction and maintenance activities across the Fraser Coast, including but not limited to:
  • Footpath and pavement construction/maintenance.
  • Concrete works including bitumen, asphalt, and structures.
  • Installation and maintenance of drainage systems, kerbs, and channels.
  • Landscape establishment, gardening, and turf maintenance.
  • Retaining wall construction.
  • Cleaning and maintenance of outdoor furniture, shelters, and assets.
  • Paving, line marking, and pedestrian crossing maintenance.
  • Inspection and reporting of public areas for hazards and defects.
  • Operation of power tools, machinery, and electronic equipment.
  • Driving and operation of a motor vehicles. Medium and Hevey Rigid licence is desirable not compulsory.

I have worked with many great crews across all my placements. I am treated as one of the team and I make sure I have my crew-mates back. What I enjoy about the placements is I get to work on maintaining and improving the Fraser Coast.

After leaving school a few years back, I hadn't discovered the ideal workplace fit for myself. Joining the TEMPO team was my gateway to establishing a career within Council. It offered invaluable training that I applied across all my postings. Through dedication and hard work, I progressed to secure a permanent position within one of the teams. The TEMPO program has been instrumental, allowing me to explore the diverse operations of Council, establish invaluable connections across various areas, and significantly contribute to my career development.

Since settling in Hervey Bay post-retirement, I realised how much I missed the mateship and fulfilment that work provided. The TEMPO program has given me the flexibility to accept temporary roles across the Fraser Coast. One of the main benefits, I have enjoyed is Council's ongoing dedication to training and development, allowing me to continually up-skill and grow.
These are a few highlights of the success the program has brought to its participants. It has provided all participants, with transferable skills to support future job placement and career growth.
What all successful candidates have had in common is a willingness to have a go, work safely, and a great team spirit.
Placements are generally Monday to Friday hours fall between 6 am and 6 pm.
Timeline
  • Application received – Closing date is 15 January 2024
  • Interview day – involves participating in a round robin. Week commencing 29 January 2024
  • One-day training course - Week commencing 05 February 2024
  • Recruitment checks including functional capacity, reference, and police checks.
