We are seeking the best suited applicant to join our hard-working team of Health professionals for a 6-month contract. The role of the Pathology Assistant will work within the Anatomical Pathology team to aid in the provision of a high quality, customer focused Anatomical Pathology Service. The Pathology Assistant reports to the Supervising Scientist.
The Anatomical Pathology Central laboratory provides a comprehensive histology, cytology and mortuary service to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, the Queensland Children's Hospital, as well as a central support and referral service to laboratories throughout Queensland and overseas.
Maintenance of the laboratory environment including block and slide filing, cleaning, equipment maintenance and restocking of consumables.
Key competencies (role specific criteria)
You will be assessed on your ability to demonstrate the following:
- Demonstrated experience or ability to acquire skills to perform basic laboratory duties associated with Anatomical Pathology including handling biological specimens and preparation of basic chemical solutions.
- Demonstrated experience or ability to acquire skills in the interpretation of request forms together with ability to perform rapid and accurate data entry.
- Demonstrate high level interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively and work productively in a team environment, and to respond to enquiries and instruction by clients
- Proven ability to follow instructions and standard operating procedures and work conscientiously and accurately with minimal supervision after appropriate training
- Demonstrate exceptional time management skills and the ability to prioritise tasks in order to meet service delivery deadlines.
Qualifications, registrations and other requirements
- There are no mandatory requirements for this position, however previous experience working in a histology laboratory or with a laboratory information system (LIS) will be highly regarded.
- Candidates must be able to participate in a roster system, including overtime as required. Current Laboratory hours fall between 0530-2300 Monday to Friday and 0600-1530 Saturday.
- In some circumstances and following consultation, Queensland Health staff may be required to participate in 24 hours shift or on-call arrangements.
