Are you a researcher with a lived experience who is passionate about making a difference to the lives of children with neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you as a Peer Researcher.
We are seeking a Peer Researcher (2.5 hours per week) to join our team at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead in Sydney. In this role, you will work on a research project that helps children access a mental health program called the Feelings Program. You will use your lived experience to ensure the Feelings Program meets the needs of children with neurodevelopmental conditions and their communities. For example, you will help to develop research questions, plan how we invite people to take part in our research project, and tell us what you think of research results.What you'll be doingThe Peer Researcher will assist with all parts of a new project that will help autistic children and their families access a mental health program, called The Feelings Program.The project will make The Feelings Program digital so more people can access it.The job is based in Sydney at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. The address is Corner Hakwsbury Road and Hainsworth Street Westmead.The Peer Researcher will help with all parts of the project.This is an important new job for NSW public health. The job has been funded by a generous philanthropist who has invested in this specialized role. A researcher with a lived experience will help ensure The Feelings Program is providing best outcomes for autistic children and their families.This is a targeted position for persons with disability under the Government Sector Employment Rule 26, where only persons with disability are ‘eligible persons’ to apply.   • A strong interest in the mental health of autistic children and adolescents. This includes an understanding of the potential impacts of mental health difficulties in autistic children and adolescents.
  • Ability to translate relevant lived experience to support research outcomes and engagement.
  • The ability to assist others with work and work under close supervision, in order to meet project goals. This includes the ability to advocate for themselves, and having an understanding of the right time to do so.
  • A commitment to continuous improvement by being open to constructive feedback. This includes an openness and commitment to developing skills in order to produce best outcomes for autistic children, their role as a Peer Researcher, the project team and the research.
  • Competent computer literacy.
  • Demonstrates basic judgment when encountered with a simple problem. Has the ability to look at established methods and procedures to solve problems.
  • Ability to follow protocols.
  • Self-motivated with demonstrated research potential. This includes an interest in research co-design, co-production, and inclusive research practices.
