STS Leeuwin II, Australia’s largest sail training vessel and Western Australia’s only Tall Ship.  At Leeuwin, we are not just a crew; but a team of passionate individuals that support the Foundations mission to “challenge and inspire education and development of our youth and the wider community”.

At home in Fremantle Port, the ship also sails to Albany, Busselton, Bunbury, Geraldton, Monkey Mia, Exmouth and Dampier (our new home port in the north). 

We’re seeking an exceptional and adventurous individual to join our crew as the Relief Captain/Master of the majestic STS Leeuwin II.

Position Overview:

The role of Master holds paramount importance in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of the Leeuwin II under the purview of the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation. Tasked with overseeing all aspects of maritime operations, safety compliance, crew management, and vessel maintenance, the Master plays a central role in upholding the highest standards of safety and operational excellence.

Responsibilities:

Ensuring Vessel Compliance:

  • Maintain the seaworthiness of Leeuwin II, ensuring adherence to WA Marine Navigation Act 2012, Marine Orders, AMSA requirements, Occupational Health & Safety Act, and Uniform Shipping Laws Code/National Standard for Commercial Vessels.
  • Operate the vessel in a safe manner, minimizing hazardous situations or practices both underway and during docked operations.

Maintenance and Safety Oversight:

  • Implement and maintain an appropriate maintenance checklist, ensuring completion of all necessary maintenance while promptly addressing faulty or hazardous equipment.
  • Conduct regular safety drills and update-training sessions as per the Safety Management System (SMS) and AMSA requirements.
  • Ensure crew induction courses are completed, and the crew is aware of hazards, safe practices, and proper equipment usage.

Safety Management System Implementation:

  • Enforce adherence to the Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation's Safety Management System (SMS), actively participating in its implementation and continuous improvement.
  • Log and report all accidents involving the vessel or crew/trainees as required, including relevant details and conversations held at the accident site.

Crew Management and Leadership:

  • Direct and assist the crew in vessel maintenance, ensuring safety equipment is readily accessible and functional.
  • Motivate and guide the crew in the observance of safety policies, issuing clear instructions and orders as necessary.

Administrative Duties:

  • Provide input into educational program development and delivery to maintain quality and feasibility.
  • Manage the vessel's budget, including petty cash on board, and oversee the chart portfolio and navigation publications to ensure they are up to date.

Continuous Improvement and Reporting:

  • Review the SMS regularly, reporting deficiencies to the CEO and Operations Manager as part of internal processes and reviews.
  • Undertake the role of Watch Officer during designated shifts.

The Master's role demands a strong commitment to safety, adherence to regulations, and effective leadership in managing vessel operations. It necessitates a proactive approach to maintaining a safe working environment while ensuring compliance with industry standards and organizational protocols.

Qualifications:

  • Master <100 metres near coastal 
  • GMDSS or LROCP
  • AMSA medical
  • Certificate of Safety Training
  • Square Rig Endorsement is desirable
  • Traditional sailing experience is desirable
  • Pilot Exemption Certificate for Fremantle (LOAF will assist the right candidate to obtain this)

The successful candidate is required to have a current Working with Children Check and undertake a Police Clearance.
