About the Scholarship
PhD scholarship in Youth, housing, homelessness and justice

This scholarship, generously supported by the Brian M. Davis Foundation and the Centre for Urban Transitions, aims to explore the links between homelessness and a young person’s involvement in the criminal justice system (custodial or non-custodial) with a focus on developing high quality research. Currently, limited research exists on housing interventions for youth in the justice system, with most literature focusing on institutional settings rather than private dwellings. We aim to fill this gap by studying the impact of housing interventions on young individuals in the justice system.

We seek candidates with a strong background in social sciences, particularly housing studies, criminology, or sociology, and experience in qualitative research. Familiarity with quantitative methods is desirable. The position, based at the Centre for Urban Transitions (CUT) at Swinburne University, involves conducting research with a focus on policy translation and interventions benefiting marginalized groups, emphasising equity and social justice.

The successful candidate will join Swinburne Universitys Centre for Urban Transitions (CUT), dedicated to impactful research on urban futures globally. They will contribute to the Centres publication and impact initiatives, collaborating with a vibrant community of PhD students and researchers.

Position Purpose
This scholarship offers a 3-year Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) focused on youth studies, housing precarity, and interventions to reduce recidivism. Candidates will align their research with the project "A place to call home," led by Professor Wendy Stone and Dr. Joel McGregor. The project investigates housing instability and homelessness as factors in youth justice involvement and the potential of housing interventions for crime desistance. Applicants should submit a CV, a 1-page cover letter addressing key criteria, and a 2-page expression of interest (EOI) outlining a research proposal aligned with the project. The successful candidate will work with the supervision team to develop a comprehensive research proposal and will be supervised by Professor Wendy Stone, Dr. Joel McGregor, and Dr. Piret Veeroja.

About you
To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • First Class Honours (H1) award or equivalent; or for exceptional candidates a H2A award – see http://www.swinburne.edu.au/research/research-degrees for further information.
  • Familiarity and prior knowledge of the main academic, policy and methodological debates and issues relating to one of the following fields: youth studies, housing and homelessness studies or youth justice.
  • Clarity of the EOI including: research question(s), data availability and methodological selection/justification
  • Demonstrated experience with qualitative research methods and familiarity with quantitative research methods.
  • Background in and/or familiarity and prior knowledge of the disciplines of youth studies, housing and homelessness studies and youth justice. This may include an undergraduate degree criminology, sociology, housing studies, human services or related degrees.
