Overview of the role

Due to recent investment and growth opportunities in our plant, we have multiple positions available for you to join the Technical Operations team. We are looking for experienced Metallurgists / Chemical Engineers with a background in pyrometallurgical processes and or small-medium improvement initiatives.

The Plant Metallurgist is responsible for ensuring metallurgical processes are operated in a stable and efficient manner. They identify opportunities and implement solutions to continually optimise or improve the process so the business can extract the highest sustainable financial return in the safest, most environmentally responsible way possible. The Plant Metallurgist provides day-to-day technical support to the operations teams and drives optimal operation derived from sound metallurgical fundamentals and analysis of performance data. They also provide leadership and technical expertise to implement short-term initiatives and projects through to completion.

Key responsibilities of the role include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical support and analysis under the general direction of the Senior Metallurgists and Operational Superintendents, with support from the Principal Metallurgist
  • Understand the process of the physical plant functions, chemistry, energy and mass balances
  • Define operating ranges for plant parameters based on analysis of plant data and metallurgical principles, then work with operators to ensure effective operation within this range
  • Day-to-day monitoring of the process, identify variances and take actions to rectify when required
  • Collect, measure and analyse data, documenting it in a concise and timely manner
  • Identify improvement opportunities, evaluating the benefits and risks, presenting the idea and if approved, implement accordingly

Qualifications/Experience & Abilities:

  • Graduate qualification in Chemical Engineering, Metallurgy or similar
  • 2+ years in a plant based Chemical Engineer, Metallurgist or similar role
  • Experience in pyrometallurgical / smelting processes is highly desirable
  • Analytical approach with a keen eye for detail with the ability to use statistical analysis to draw insight from process data
  • Ability to establish rapport, develop and maintain a sound relationship with technical, operating and maintenance personnel and provide leadership and coaching where required
  • Design and deliver clear communications across all levels of business
  • Superior skill with Microsoft Office products
  • Experience in OSIsoft PI system, metallurgical modelling software is desirable
