About the role 
Part of AEMO’s Forecasting department, our Principal Analyst will provide strategic technical direction to the delivery of key projects that inform and/or drive change within the energy market; delivering insightful analysis on the energy markets which AEMO operates to identify key emerging issues and trends.  Focusing on modelling, analysis and understanding the drivers and risks to the reliability of electricity supply in the NEM the role will require inputs to public reports and presentations.

What you will be doing 

  • Provide expert technical advice, expertise, and leadership on market modelling matters, including coordination of the ESOO and other reliability modelling processes including implementation of new approaches to reflect emerging adequacy issues in the power system and developing modelling to support generator and storage project specific evaluation.
  • Apply advanced modelling methods, economic theory, and/or technical engineering knowledge to finalise model inputs and assumptions, run models, analyse results, and present analysis
  • Play a key role in writing public reports and presenting on key issues to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain effective and proactive relationships with internal and external stakeholders with an emphasis on joint planning and consultation.
  • Support in people-management related processes, such as recruitment and development of staff, training, and regular feedback and performance appraisals

What you will bring to the role

  • Extensive experience in a modelling role in industry or consulting
  • Demonstrated experience working with PLEXOS or other similar energy market modelling software
  • Strong experience working with analysis tools such as MS Office suite, SQL, R, VBA, Python, Power BI, databricks, and PowerBI
  • Deep knowledge of the energy environment and the political, legal and regulatory framework in which AEMO and electricity industry operates, or the ability to acquire such knowledge
  • Sound knowledge of energy market principles, NEM, WEM, or gas markets dispatch process, generator behaviour, network constraints, and power system operation
