Job description

Who we are

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) commenced operations in 2013 as the national entity responsible for regulating all heavy vehicles with a gross vehicle mass over 4.5 tonnes. We are headquartered in Brisbane and employ more than 750 people across the ACT, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and Victoria.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity for experienced prosecution lawyers to join our Prosecution team at the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR). In these busy and varied roles, you will manage, prepare and conduct complex prosecutions on behalf of the NHVR.

A key challenge (and opportunity) of the roles is the requirement to work across multiple jurisdictions with largely untested, new Heavy Vehicle National Law provisions and Regulations.

Interstate travel forms part of our roles, along with the requirement to occasionally work outside of ordinary hours.

What’s on offer

We have a Full Time and Part Time (3 days per week) opportunity available, located in Parramatta, Melbourne, Adelaide or Brisbane. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Ongoing professional development, support and training
  • Rostered day off and additional leave over the Christmas closure
  • Flexible work arrangements and rostered day off
  • Superannuation co-contribution scheme
  • Access to wellbeing programs including Fitness Passport and discounted health insurance
  • Access to salary packaging including novated lease
  • Supportive team and work environment

About You

As the ideal candidate, you will have extensive proven experience in the field of prosecution or in another legal environment including all facets of trial preparation, working with court procedures, summary procedures and relevant legislation. You are experienced in dealing with large volumes of evidence often on tight deadlines and can confidently manage a high case load with competing priorities.

With over seven years’ experience as a legal practitioner, you will have the ability to undertake extensive and complex case management and are a confident advocate who enjoys running large trials yourself and instructing counsel on high profile matters.

You are a positive, flexible team player, whose high level interpersonal and communication skills enable you to give complex legal advice whilst delivering a high standard of customer service for internal and external stakeholders. As a natural leader, you will enjoy coaching and developing others in the team and can foster collegiate professional relationships with key stakeholders.

Application Process

We look forward to receiving your application, including CV and cover letter (please state whether you are applying for the Full Time or Part Time vacancy).

Applications close 11:55pm, 19 February 2024.

We are committed to being an inclusive, diverse and flexible workplace where differences are valued. We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, experience and abilities.
