What you'll do

The Principle Chapter Lead is responsible for providing the strategic direction of the Chapters within the Engineering Practice. They enable the engineering team to adapt, grow and innovate the capabilities in our business to be world-class. They are responsible for the right sizing, efficiency, continuous improvement, and quality of their capabilities in the business and for building our talent pipeline and future leaders.

This role partners with the other members of the Technology leadership team to ensure we deliver on agreed roadmaps and that the Engineering Practice works towards best in class tools, technologies, delivery processes and professional development. As a key member of the Digital Technology leadership team they help embed Big W's values and ways of working.

You are a technologist at heart, have a passion for a variety of technology and have a growth mindset, always challenge yourself and the team to learn more, to refine the way we work and pursue excellence. You have an engineering mindset - you embrace challenges with a very solution focused approach, you can brainstorm solutions and advocate for an approach by communicating effectively.


Responsibilities:

  • Guiding the team with the right engineering capabilities, capacity and practices are in place to deliver Big W X priorities
  • Driving the correct Engineering Practice and Chapters maximise team engagement and delivery effectiveness - developing and empowering your team to work end to end, creating a customer first team culture
  • Ensuring alignment with the Practices model implemented across the broader Tech-X team
  • Providing thought-leadership on the technologies, tools and processes / standard used by squads
  • Collaborating with the Solution Architecture team to ensure our target state architecture and technology decisions are aligned with our Engineering Practice roadmap
  • Ensuring that the technology choices made by squads align with the strategic architecture agreed with the Solution Architecture team
  • Helping the Technology Delivery Managers and Group Product Managers balance delivery and capacity tradeoffs
  • Leading the recruitment, talent-pipeline and professional development processes for engineers
  • Coaching squads on how to solve complex technology problems
  • Coaching Chapter Leads / Tech Leads on how to ensure that solutions are Performant, Secure, Cost Effective, Reliable, Deployable, Testable, Evolvable and that Tech-debt is effectively managed

What you'll bring

As an experienced professional from a technology and digital background, you will be a passionate people leader who enjoys working collaboratively to bring technology solutions to life, with a desire to remain close to how technology really gets applied. You will be adept at balancing the tradeoffs that are part of leading an entrepreneurial team within a corporate environment, and enjoy working in a flat structure where people lean-in to help achieve challenging targets.

  • 7+ years experience leading engineering teams that are comprised of multiple squads
  • Strong background with hands-on engineering delivery with modern web technologies across the full stack
  • Agile software delivery experience
  • Exceptional communication & problem solving skills
