About the company
We are family owned horticultural business with nearly 30 years experience in Riverland region, South Australia. Our products ranges from different varieties of stone fruits to persimmon with both fresh and dried fruit. We are running a number of orchards in different locations in the region, and planning to expand our persimmon production in the coming year.
We are currently seeking experienced full-time Production Horticulturist to join our team.
The position involves the following tasks.
Order seed, fertilizer and chemicals
· Select seeds based on weather and soil conditions and yield
· Manage the propagation and planting operation
· Maintain sufficient stocks of plant foods and fertilizers
· Monitor and manage nursery plants
· Ensure that all land preparations are done as per established procedures.
· Ensure relevant machinery and equipment is maintained
· Operate various machinery and equipments which include tractors, slashers, sprayers, cultivators, cherry pickers, trailers, forklift.
· Maintain good plant health and manage disease
· Identify and report unusual disease or plant pest signs
· Prepare and apply chemicals to control pest, weeds and diseases
· Implement irrigation of crops based on irrigation schedule and weather
· Carry maintenance of the irrigation systems such as flushing pipe lines, clean filters.
· Coordinate horticultural crop harvesting
· Manage biosecurity risks
· Sample and interpret soil conditions
· Provide advice on plant and seed varieties
· Maintain soil, plant, treatment and yield records.
It is essential that you:
· Are currently living in Australia.
· Are willing to work in regional and remote areas.
· Are willing to work long hours (including weekend) during the harvest season (November to May)
· Being physically fit
· Have relevant qualifications (such as Diploma in production horticulture).
· Hold a current Chemcert (or equivalent) certification.
· Have at least two years experience working in fruit growing orchards
· Have at least one year experience in the same role
· Are an Australian citizen or an Australian permanent resident and can email documentation to support this.
· Hold a current driver’s license and access to a car.
· Have excellent problem-solving skills.
· Have excellent communication skills.
It is preferable that you:
· Have sound knowledge of workplace health and safety.
· Hold a current forklift license and have operational experience.
· Competent computer skills
· Have experience with Microsoft Excel and Word.
Salary: 50000 - 60000 per annum
