Deakin’s Faculty of Health is one of the largest and fastest growing health faculties in Australia. The School of Psychology, an ERA 5 (well above world standard) rated psychology department, is seeking to appoint a Professor or Associate Professor, an experienced researcher with an international profile in the Psychology of aging research.

The Centre for Social and Early Emotional Development (SEED) conducts world-leading research on social development and its origins in early emotional life. SEED hosts specialist research centres and programs in Wellbeing, Attachment, Addiction and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. SEED is growing to fulfill a broader vision of establishing a Centre for Lifespan Research (SEED-Lifespan), one that builds on the firm foundations we have established in early development, to one that includes research programs across the lifespan, including middle (25-65 years) and later adult life (65+ years).

This is an opportunity to play a key role to lead large scale, highly productive, high-quality research and scholarship activities generating high quality outputs focusing on mental health and aging in older adults. This role will provide school leadership in the discipline of the psychology of aging through advice on curriculum development, provision of classes and master classes and will also contribute through supervision and mentoring of HRD students.

The appointee will develop and lead major industry partnerships and collaborations. These significant clinical and research partnerships with industry bodies are central to the mission to answer questions that make a difference to the communities we inhabit and serve.

The successful candidate will be appointed based on experience relevant to the role.

Your key responsibilities will include:

Research and Innovation

  • Lead major, highly productive, high-quality research, and scholarship activities generating high impact outputs, with a focus on mental health and ageing in older adults (clinical and/or public health)
  • Demonstrate sustained and expanding national and international reputation for a substantial and growing body of work in the psychology of ageing, recognized for quality, excellence and impact
  • Recruit and supervise HDR students with timely completions and productive, high-quality outcomes
  • Provide effective mentoring to HDR students, ECRs and MCRs to support professional and career development and employability

Education and Employability

  • Provide School leadership in the discipline of the psychology of aging through advice on curriculum development and the provision of master classes in the speciality area

University Citizenship and Engagement

  • Lead the development of, and significantly contribute to community engagement activities

Key selection criteria for the Professor role:

  • PhD in a relevant discipline
  • Demonstrated success as an eminent authority in psychology of aging research at the national and international level through high quality publications, and invited / keynote presentations and collaborations
  • Sustained success in obtaining and delivering on competitive external research grants and other funding
  • Excellence in engagement with research, community, industry and government to enhance the national and international standing of the discipline
  • Evidence of successful leadership of research teams and research administration
  • Demonstrated delivery of outcomes aligned with Deakin’s community engagement agenda through formal roles and/or informal initiatives
