What is the role?

Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Radio and Electronic Support.

The Radio and Electronics Support (RES) Team within the Operational Technology portfolio is responsible for the delivery and maintenance of a range of communications capabilities that directly support response policing operations. The team has members located nationally and is an agile, multi-disciplinary team focused on delivering business value and continuous improvement.

The Radio & Electronics Support (RES) Team is currently looking to engage suitably qualified and motivated applicants at various locations to fill a number of roles. Job opportunities will be available in Sydney, however this unique role provides opportunity to travel across the country to engage with and manage remotely located team members. Successful candidate will have reporting timelines to management located in Canberra.

You will also be required to contribute to the achievement of outcomes in accordance with the regulatory framework, the AFP Code of Conduct and the AFP Governance Instruments. It is expected that the successful applicant will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?

Successful applicants will be required to develop an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the AFP business and the impact of roles and functions undertaken in relation to the organisation’s reputation to effectively manage operations. This work may include:  

  • Providing operational support and technical advice through the acquisition, development, deployment, installation and maintenance of systems for use in Mobile Radio and fixed site communications equipment;
  • Maintenance of the mission critical AFP radio network;
  • Management of the national radio system using technologies including P25 and WAVE;
  • Support the uplift of Radio and communications capability through enterprise program management activities;
  • Support and provide advice on the planning and implementation of telecommunications devices, networks and systems such as voice, radio, P25 core, two-way, data, microwave, satellite and digital data systems;
  • Support and assist AFP in commercial discussions with State Radio Networks and vendors;
  • Issue and return of radios (controlled items) for BAU and special operations;
  • Decommissioning of redundant radio sites; and
  • Support to operational vehicles and Electronic items such as Digital Record of Interview (DROI).

Essential requirements

  • You must be an Australian Citizen.
  • A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
  • A strong understanding of technologies (Radio Frequencies and Communications).
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to translate between business and technical people.
  • Relevant qualification or extensive experience and expertise in Information Technology, Radio Engineering or closely related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the required SFIA 8 skills relevant to the role.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead others.

Additional information

  • This position is an AFP Band 6
  • AFP employees are required to have received a minimum of two COVID-19 vaccinations (or one dose if the Janssen vaccine was used).
