The Opportunity:
This position works as a Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service and Partnerships Marine Park Ranger/Vessel Master within the southern section of the Great Barrier Reef and Marine Parks Region. This Ranger/Vessel Master role's focus area is to operate and maintain Departmental vessels and associated equipment as well as to assist in marine, island and coastal protected area management including in water activities. As a member of a team, this position will be aligned significantly to the annual operations of the departments' short and long-range patrol vessels, including the new 24m patrol vessel “Reef Resilience” and will include patrols for extended periods up to 15 days at a time, totalling up to 130 days at sea per annum.
The holder of this position must have an Open Coxswain qualification and be willing to up skill to both a Master Class V and Marine Engine Drivers II with the view of being trained to operate large offshore vessels. This role will participate in island and vessel-based operations which include regularly being away from home with overnight stays up to 15 days away and will include regular weekend work. Good physical health is a requirement of the position as it is hands on in delivering the units work requirements.
Field work including exposure to the sun (UV), hot / humid tropical temperatures, vessel engine rooms, fire and smoke, registered chemicals and poisons and long hours of work in remote areas, can be expected. This position may also be required to undertake in water and SCUBA diving activities, a rescue diver or higher qualification is favourable. Rangers may work across five focus areas dependent on operational need, including Pest Management, Fire Management, Estate Management, Visitor Management and Assets and Safety. As such, Rangers may turn their hands to a wide range of jobs that can be safely undertaken by nontradespersons. The position will also be required to undertake compliance and enforcement activities in conjunction with other State and Commonwealth Agencies. Compliance, education and enforcement matters may include activities relating to Marine zoning including the recreational and commercial use of the national and marine park.
