Salary: UOM 4-$73,943 - $78,476 or UOM 5 - $79,961 - $91,844 p.a. plus 17% super (Level of appointment will be based on qualifications and experience of the applicant)

About the Role
This presents an excellent opportunity to join the Melbourne Bioresources Platform team and provide high quality support to interesting research projects while also having the opportunity to train and mentor junior staff. As a Research Animal Technician, your responsibilities will include appropriate husbandry care and welfare of Research Animals within Melbourne Bioresources Platform facilities, and you will work closely with investigators to assist with standard manipulative techniques used in research setting.
Your duties include meticulous observation of animals under your care, promptly detecting any changes in health, appearance, or behaviour. In such cases, you will notify researchers and the veterinarian promptly. Your contributions in this role will significantly impact the work of our researchers and, consequently, benefit the broader community.
You will play a crucial role in implementing various strategies to supply quality animals and to ensure that researchers' needs for technical assistance are met.
Your responsibilities will include:
  • Provide appropriate levels of care and husbandry to Research Animals that meets a high standard
  • Assist investigators with standard manipulative techniques used commonly with Research Animals. May be required to assist with specialized techniques once suitably trained
Additional responsibilities expected as experienced Research Animal Technician:
  • Maybe required to mentor junior staff and assist in developing their competency
  • Assist researchers with high degree of skill in all experimental procedures commonly required in a biological resources facility
Who we are looking for
We're currently seeking people with well-developed written communication skills. You should be able to take initiative as well as work under direction, and demonstrate flexibility in adapting to a changing environment. Moreover, you should possess the capacity to quickly learn new skills and knowledge.
You will also have:
  • A relevant diploma in Applied Science, Animal Technology or similar scientific field
  • Proven commitment to working with animals in research settings with the ability to exercise sound judgement to ensure animal health and welfare requirements are met
  • Proven experience and the ability to perform all the basic manipulative techniques used in a research setting including a range of methods of substance delivery and sample collection
Additional requirements expected as experienced Research Animal Technician:
  • Extensive practical experience with the care and breeding of mice in a research setting, with an excellent understanding of the varying strategies that can be deployed
  • A high level of technical skill in manipulative techniques
  • An ability to mentor junior staff in workplace requirements including interaction with the research staff as well as the basic husbandry of animals.

Business Services provides a full range of class leading information technology, facilities management, finance, HR and health and safety services to all operating entities of the University.
The Melbourne Bioresources Platform is University wide platform that houses and cares for small laboratory species to assist researchers studying basic biological function and disease. The platform brings together all five of the small animal facilities on campus and combines the resources and expertise of many skilled staff. The aim is to offer a high standard of service to researchers combined with best practice in animal care and welfare. The platform houses mainly mice but has small numbers of rats, ferrets, dunnarts as well as a state-of-the-art zebrafish facility.
