About the opportunityThe University of Sydney is seeking a Research Fellow in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to support the expanding Cities and Planetary Health transdisciplinary research portfolio in the (ADP) led byThe post holder will mainly contribute to research on cardiometabolic health and/or mental health involving linkage, analysis, and management of geographical, spatial, and environmental data. In addition to contributing to these research areas, the post holder will be expected to lead studies, write publications, and apply for grants/fellowships that complement existing research strengths in the team.The position will contribute to the development and delivery of teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses, microcredentials and GIS clinics to provide support to researchers and PhD students. Experience in applying GIS to understand the spatial patterning of health and/or environmental factors that influence health (e.g., green spaces) is essential. Experience in the analysis of spatial data derived from wearable technologies (e.g., global positioning systems activity trackers) is desirable.This post is 0.5FTE and expected to work at ADP headquarters on Camperdown Campus for most of the time to contribute to the growth of the team and the wider community in ADP.Your key responsibilities will be to:
  • conduct and oversee the delivery of high quality quantitative/GIS research within the Cities and Planetary Health research portfolio led by Professor Thomas Astell-Burt using GIS methods (e.g., choropleth mapping, spatial data linkages and manipulations, and spatial statistical analyses)
  • provide expert and timely input into study design of projects/proposals (e.g., site identification)
  • lead and co-author high quality research papers for publication in excellent journals
  • write research proposals and generate external research funding as lead investigator with members of the Cities and Planetary Health team, and as a contributor to projects led by other team members
  • manage research projects including budgeting, convening meetings, preparing funder reports
  • develop and deliver teaching on undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses and microcredentials on statistics and related topics relevant to the Cities and Planetary Health team
  • lead statistics clinics to provide methodological support to researchers and PhD students
  • supervise and mentor higher degree research students and student-led projects
  • engage stakeholders across all stages of the research process, including co-design activities and dissemination in various academic and non-academic formats.
About you
  • an established track record in the GIS as demonstrated by meaningful contributions to a range of projects and publications as lead and co-author.
  • PhD involving GIS, and other qualifications either in GIS or in degrees in which it is typically taught as a core subject (e.g., Bachelor/Master of Geography, Master of Quantitative Social Sciences)
  • strong capacities to conduct GIS analyses, as demonstrated by publication in excellent journals
  • mastery of relevant software for all aspects of GIS (e.g., ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, R) and proven capability to conduct GIS analyses and explain processes and results to non-GIS experts
  • proven ability to design, implement, and evaluate teaching activities (including methods clinics)
  • be enthusiastic about advancing GIS research as applied to cities and planetary health topics.
